“There is strength in numbers,” goes the old saying. There are also plenty of conversation starters. Here are a few figures to pour out next time you taste wine.

Pro tip: Introduce these while your wit is still sharp. If you’ve already knocked over two glasses of wine and puked into the potted palm tree, it’s way too late.

51.9——这是2020年葡萄牙人平均喝了多少升葡萄酒。算下来比一周喝一瓶还多，排在全球葡萄酒消费国第一位。

51.9 -- How many liters of wine people in Portugal guzzled on average in 2020. That’s basically a bottle a week and the most in the world. 

根据国际葡萄和葡萄酒组织的统计，意大利以46.6升排名第二，法国以46升排名第三。

The silver medal went to Italy with 46.6 liters and the bronze to France with 46 liters, according to stats from International Organisation of Vine and Wine.

And China? Consumers here drink plenty of baijiu and beer but only average 1 liter of wine per year. We need to do lots more training!

9000年前，中国用葡萄酿造了第一批酒。考古学家分析了在河南省贾湖遗址发现的陶器残留物。

9,000 -- The number of years ago that the first alcohol was made in China with grapes. Archeologists analyzed residue from pottery uncovered at a site called Jiahu in Henan province.

研究发现，早在9000年前，人们就用当地的葡萄、山楂、蜂蜜和大米酿造酒。毫无疑问，当年的热门话题是用什么食物来搭配这样的烈酒。

It showed people made booze with native grapes, hawthorn, honey and rice as long as nine millennia ago. No doubt the hot topic back in the day was what food to pair with that grog.

120,000 – Roughly the number of hectares of vines in Bordeaux. That’s 1.8 million mu, about equal to all of China’s grape wine vineyards combined.

远超另一个著名的葡萄酒产区纳帕谷，纳帕谷占地约1.8万公顷(27万亩) 。(值得注意的是，中国拥有世界上最多的食用葡萄葡萄园!)

And far more than another famous wine region, Napa Valley, which has about 18,000 hectares or 270,000 mu. (It should be noted that China has the most table grape vineyards in the world!)

268,000,000 -- How many liters of wine China produced in 2021, according to China Alcoholic Drinks Association. That is a 29% drop from 2020.

But the good news is Chinese wine is rapidly improving, whether it is made in bone-dry inland Ningxia, rainy coastal Shandong or mountainous Yunnan.

If you are curious about incoming bottled wine, China imported 425 million liters last year.

1,000,000 -- The most paid, in dollars, for a bottle of wine at auction. That’s 6.3 million renminbi! For a six-liter bottle—a size known as an Imperial or Methuselah--of 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon from Glass Slipper Vineyard in California.

Finally, 29,411 – How many bottles of Bonaval Brut Cava you could buy with RMB 3,500,000 instead of that 1945 bottle.
