Argentina is famous for many things and that includes wine. And the nation’s best-known grape -- the Lionel Messi of the wine team -- is the crowd-pleaser Malbec.

Malbec is historically linked to the Cahors region in southwest France, with ties going back some 2,000 years to the Roman Empire.

But Argentina is now far and away the world’s top producer, with over 75 percent of the planet’s Malbec plantings. And more than 85 percent of those vines are found in one region, Mendoza, where they grow at an average altitude of 900 meters in the shadow of the Andes mountains.

Why April 17?

On that day in 1853, a new institute was proposed for Argentina, one linked to the search for new grape varieties to help boost the country’s wine industry.

Malbec from Mendoza has much appeal.
