Once upon a time, a Swiss girl named Claudia Masueger landed in China with two suitcases of wine and -- after a business journey with as many twists and turns as an alpine ski race -- opened a wine shop chain.

I recently chatted with Claudia about everything from her life to the state of the wine world. Here are 11 takeaways for 11 years of CHEERS.

1 - 5

First things first, Claudia knows how to quarantine as a Swiss in China. When she returned, she made her three-week Qingdao hotel stay homier by bringing a raclette set so she could melt her favorite cheese.

Claudia has also seen major changes in CHEERS’ fans over the years.

“When we started CHEERS, there were hardly any wine drinkers within the younger generation and not many good-value wines in the market,” she says. “We started with easy, drinkable and affordable wines.”

After all these years of enjoying wines and weekly free tastings, consumers have more knowledge and sophisticated palates.

“They are very curious and every year we have added new regions and grapes.”

One of those regions is China.

Claudia说：“中国有许多富有创新精神、才华横溢的年轻酿酒师”。CHEERS齐饮自去年开始上架Ian Dai酿造的自然葡萄酒，我们将增加更多本地品牌。

“There are many innovative, talented, and young Chinese winemakers,” says Claudia. “CHEERS started listing natural wines made by Ian Dai and we will add more local labels.

“我喜欢看到那些年轻的葡萄酒专家的热情。”

“I love to see the passion of those young wine experts.”

4. 她还见证了白葡萄酒在一个红酒被视为违约品的国家的兴起。

She has also witnessed the rise of white wine in a country where red is seen as default.

“We have seen the shift, especially since 2020 from sweet to rather dry white wines,” she says. “German wines, especially Rieslings, are very popular.”

CHEERS has also added many new white wines this past year, with grapes ranging from Godello to Gruner Veltliner, Chardonnay to Sauvignon Blanc.

Claudia is constantly adjusting CHEERS to the market. Store 32 at InStreet has been at the forefront, adding a kitchen and food menu last year.

7. Claudia says China’s wine scene is more than stats. For example, import numbers are falling, but that doesn’t mean there is any shortage.

“We should not forget that cellars in China are full of wine due to excess imports earlier,” she says.

并不是所有的都是好的。

And not all of it is good.

“We can see many older wines from competitors, some sold cheap to create liquidity. One can only hope those wines have been stored properly,” she says. “Poor storage is one of the major reasons why there were and still are bad wines in the market.”

During Claudia’s last stint in Switzerland, she missed Chinese food. Her top three? “Hot pot, dumplings with spicy sauce, and all kinds of tofu dishes.”

Speaking of Switzerland, she’d like people to know the country has a unique wine industry with 200 different grape varieties.

The French region’s star is Chasselas, excellent with fondue, while the German-speaking area tends to Pinot Noir and the Italian-speaking area is well-suited for Merlot.

“A personal visit to those vineyards is highly recommended,” she says.

We also talked about how world events affect that wine in your glass. The pandemic has meant increased shipping costs and delays. The Ukraine war has boosted energy prices in Europe and cut off a major bottling plant.

Climate change has wreaked havoc on vineyards and forced wineries to find new strategies. The humble grape is tied to major world events.

Despite all this, Claudia is optimistic about the future of wine in China.

“Our goal at CHEERS is to make wine lovers smile and we have done so with many people over the past 11 years,” she says. “But I won’t be satisfied until EVERYONE is smiling.”
