Thach, a regular China visitor over the years, said Sauvignon Blanc, “with its fresh, clean style,” was among the few grapes with revenue growth last year in the US. “Americans seem to be gravitating more towards zippy refreshing white wines, and this trend is expected to continue in 2022.”

Diversification has been a theme at CHEERS, especially over the last few years, not only in terms of regions but also grapes, including Spanish Godello with its grapefruit, peach and apple character and touches of minerality and saltiness, German Dornfelder, which in this case is soft and semi-sweet with ripe black fruit, and Argentine Ancellotta, a fruity aromatic red. Give them a try.

US media outlet Bloomberg cites sparkling wine as a trend with legs.

“More and more winemakers around the world are experimenting with a range of grapes and styles to craft quality bubbly,” writes Elin McCoy, and adds that sales of “prestige” Spanish Cava rose over 60 percent in the first three quarters of 2021.

Consultancy Wine Intelligence says the pandemic has brought a sharper focus on home-grown wines: “during 2020 and 2021 there has been a significant and accelerated shift towards localism by consumers in many markets, and this trend looks set to continue.”

The company cites significant growth in sales of local wines, and drops in imported wines, in nations like the United States, Germany, Canada and Australia. We have also seen growing interest in China in local wines from places as far apart as Ningxia, Yunnan and Shandong.

CHEERS has upped its China wine game over the past year. First, it added two wines from Xiao Pu aka Petit Garden in Ningxia, including a pet-nat – a less bubbly style of sparkling wine that pre-dates Champagne -- and a red blend called The Gathering.
