The 5th Lord Carnarvon was an eccentric who loved gambling and fast motors.
The latter led him to Egypt after doctors told him the climate would ease an injury caused by one of his many car crashes.

On November 26, with Lord Carnarvon and his daughter, Lady Evelyn Herbert, watching, Carter opened the entrance to the tomb.

The curse has since been blamed for multiple disturbing deaths, many linked to the Carnarvon family and Highclere.

A month after Lord Carnarvon died, US railway boss George Jay Gould developed a sudden fatal fever after visiting the tomb.

In 1928 A C Mace, one of Carter’s excavation team, succumbed to arsenic poisoning. A year later malarial pneumonia killed Lord Carnarvon’s other half-brother, Mervyn Herbert.

His father was killed three months later after leaping from his seventh-floor apartment where treasures from the tomb were kept.

After the golden discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb, Carter spent the next 10 years cataloguing the dazzling haul of 5,398 items. They included a solid gold coffin, a face mask, thrones, archery bows, food, wine, sandals and linen underwear.There was even a dagger with a blade made from a meteorite.
