Maovember's Worthy Causes You Can Help Just by Having Fun

2017-11-05 Kyle M. theBeijinger

From a project that provides needed furniture to marginalized schools, to a bakery that trains disabled orphans to be skilled, confident, and independent, this year’s Maovember charity campaign is by no means short on worthy causes.

The fifth annual campaign, which consists of games, pledge drives, and other events at various bars and venues across Beijing from Nov 1-30, will raise funds for The Library Project and Bread of Life bakery.

Bread of Life, one of the causes Maovember is raising money for, has helped disabled adults in China thrive through its training and employment programs

This is the first time that the campaign, kickstarted by popular lifestyle blogger Jim Boyce, is partnering with Bread of Life. The program was founded by Keith and Cheryl Wyse, a couple from Ohio who worked as activists and missionaries in Beijing. Bread of Life was profiled by CNN quoting Grace Yang, one of the disabled adults who trained and worked at the bakery. She described how polio bound her to a wheelchair and prompted her parents to abandon her as a child, before detailing how Bread of Life equipped her with skills, independence, and a heartening sense of purpose. Numerous other disabled adults have enjoyed similarly life-changing opportunities through the bakery, a legacy that has continued even after Keith Wyse’s passing earlier this year.

The volunteers at The Library Project (pictured in the lead image above), meanwhile, have devoted their talent and resources to over 1,000 schools in marginalized communities across China, outfitting those rooms with furnishings that further these needy children’s studies and other efforts for a better future. Boyce donated funds to The Library Project during its debut campaign in 2013 and once again last year.

more.
