EAT: Hatsune's September Special, Mosto's New Chef, Drag Brunch

Robynne T. theBeijinger 2018-10-17

EAT: Your bite-sized guide to the best eats to be had in Beijing this week.

Hamachi at Hatsune
For their
September off-menu dish, Hatsune is celebrating high-quality hamachi (otherwise known as yellowtail or Japanese amberjack). The sliced, fresh hamachi sashimi is marinated in a savory soy dip and a dash of jalapeño sauce on top for an added spicy kick. Catch the hamachi (see what we did there?) at all branches of Hatsune until the end of September, priced at RMB 148.

Five-Course Tasting Menu at Mosto
Head over to Mosto this Friday, Sep 7 to welcome their new Chef, Richard CaBa, with a special five-course tasting dinner. Richard has created a menu fusing his Colombian and South American roots with the classic Mosto style. Chef Richard has thoughtfully crafted every dish and each course is a unique representation of his extensive travel throughout South America. Begin your meal with Sopa De Guineo, a Colombian style green plantain soup topped with goat cheese foam, crispy plantains, and dried plums before you move to the perfect end of summer salad of Duck Escabeche with shallots, celery, thyme, and paprika. Finish this decadent journey with the Suspiro Limeno, a delightfully sweet Peruvian dessert that should not be missed. The five-course tasting menu is priced at RMB 388 per person including two hours of free-flow wine.

Drag Brunch at Xian Bar
Get ready for Beijing's first ever drag brunch! Xian Bar at the EAST, Beijing Hotel will be the venue to be in for this first-of-a-kind fun event in the city. And the best part, the event will be hosted by drag queen Ms. Anna Summers and a special appearance by Beijing's own original drag queen Ms. Elizabeth Stride! Priced at RMB 300 per person (for the first 100 people to register), the brunch includes two hours of buffet brunch and unlimited drinks (think Mimosas, craft beers, sparkling wine, and more). There will also be a performance by artist Ms. Lampel Solis fresh from her solo album launch, as well as sets by DJ Chaise Lounge and prize draws with prizes from some of Beijing's top businesses. This event is organized by the Beijing LGBT Center and 20 percent of the profits will go to the Center.

Barbecue Pulled Pork at Slow Boat
Slow Boat's latest chef collaboration is out, taking inspiration from a summertime barbecue favorite: The barbecue pulled pork sandwich. Made in collaboration with Ramo, the pulled pork sandwich features an abundance of juicy slow-cooked pork smothered with Ramo's homemade barbecue sauce layered over a bed of tangy coleslaw and fresh cilantro. Their signature Ayi-oli sauce adds an extra kick. Opt for plant-based "pork" to make it vegetarian. The burger is available until the end of September.

New Barbecue Menu at Home Plate
Speaking of barbecue, Home Plate BBQ has a new menu featuring some new dishes and a whole butcher's shop-worth of Texas-style barbecue meats, most of which can be ordered by weight (a good choice for big groups). Try the pork chop (RMB 68/250g), a mala-flavored Chengdu sausage (RMB 35/link) or the pork belly (RMB 78/250g), which comes highly recommended for its melt-in-the-mouth meat and crispy skin. Sample a selection of the new smoked meats on that Newfangled BBQ Trail (RMB 568, pictured above), a platter featuring pork chop, beef pastrami, Chengdu sausage, crispy pork belly, barbecue duck, and Texas ribs. If you're in the mood for something smaller than a hulking plate of protein, you can go for something off the new bar snacks menu, which includes dishes like tamales (RMB 30), pulled pork hush puppies (RMB 35), and brisket sliders (RMB 25 for one, RMB 70 for three). Bar snacks are available from 2pm-1am. We're not even sure where to begin.
