Following months of reschedulings and delays, the opening day of Universal Beijing Resort in September was a massive success. Now, the park already has its sights set on an expansion, which coincides with plans to boost Tongzhou District's economic and infrastructure development.
Announced during a press conference on Wednesday, the park expansion will cover 2.2 square kilometers and includes the construction of five more hotels.
Since Universal Beijing Resort first opened, the park has seen an average of 10,000 visitors per day, having reached a peak of 110,000 visitors per day over the National Holiday in October. “I believe the park will attract more visitors once the winter season is over. If there are 100,000 daily visitors, that means there will be tens of millions of people coming to the park annually, which will further boost Tongzhou’s development,” Beijing's Vice Mayor Cui Shuqiang said during the conference.
It's hoped the Universal Studios park expnasion will attract more tourists.
Along with the park expansion, the district also plans to expand Beijing's Grand Canal from the capital to Hebei province by July next year, which will allow people to travel between both regions by boat.
Hebei could soon be little more than a boatride away.
Plus, the district has seen a boost in residents, with 15,000 government workers moving to Tongzhou in 2019. The district government has also announced plans to welcome another 30,000 people to the region by 2023, which will lead to more buildings and infrastructure, culminating in Tongzhou's goal of being home to more than 400,000 people by 2035.

"I moved to Tongzhou last year from Haidian and I feel like this district needs more academic resources and arts and cultural centers. I hope Tongzhou will become the California of China soon," remarked one netizen.
Does this view remind you of anywhere in California?
Will the day finally come when Tongzhou becomes Tonglifornia? Looks like we'll have to wait until 2035 to find out.
