08'00" loop
From the film set of "Alphaville #2", 2020
Video Installation, 08'00" loop
Melting in Time, 2022, SIngle-Channel digital video, 08'00"

TAG - New Contemporary - Seaward, Installation VIew, TAG Art Museum, 2023
Shi Zheng participated in the "TAG - New Contemporary - Seaward" exhibition at TAG Art Museum, the exhibition that congregates the works of 10 young artists active within the sphere of contemporary art: Cao Shuyi, Chen Xiaoyi, Ding Hongdan, Feng Zhixuan, He Zike, Pu Yingwei, Shen Linghao, Governance, Wang You, and Zhang Yanbei. From their indivdidual experiences and distinctive perspectives, the artists have undertaken an exploration through the transformations and evolution of organisms, human collectives, and tangible as well as virtual spaces in the context of post-human era. Through diverse art forms encompassing painting, video, installation, and new media, collectively presenting to the public the innovative thinking and aesthetic concepts of the emerging artists.
In the subsequent academic forum, revolves around the topic of "relationship between artwork and narrative," Shi Zheng said: "Perhaps the way of receiving information has changed in the current era, which has led to a change in the way artists deal with information. Narrative itself bothers me at first, as I am not a very good storyteller. The expression of art is openness, and I can let people see it in a more objective way. The two pieces on the exhibition floor then bring out what interests me as well as the differences, one is a spectacle scene and the other is an everyday scene.”

TAG - New Contemporary - Seaward, Installation VIew, TAG Art Museum, 2023
This exhibition brings two artworks of Shi Zheng, one is From the set of the film Alphaville #2, which comes from a set of digital copies of the artist's own real-life studio simulated by computer software. In the title of the work, the artist pays homage to director Jean-Luc Godard's film Alphaville and uses the set as a metaphor for his own studio environment. The deliberate incljusion of an empty swivel chair in the image suggests the absence of the owner, but at the same time accentuates the presence of the various devices on the table. Although the screen is not lit up, the hard disc light reveals the hidden nature of the machine, thereby imbuing the composition with an overarching sense of 'machines present but people absent'.

Another work Melting in Time is an artwork created by Shi Zheng in 2022. On the screen, an iceberg slowly breaks apart, disappearing in the sea. Inspired by a video of the collapse of a massive iceberg in a Greenland fjord, Shi Zheng uses computer-generated image technology to reimagine the entire process in this video work. In the artist's view, the collapse of an ice shelf is not a natural event, but a confrontation between human time, geological time, and technological time against the backdrop of climate change. Through digital manipulation, nature can be simulated and reproduced hyperrealistically, which also is in itself a metaphor for how human behavior has impacted and transformed the environments in which we live.
