  1. White Lake Farm, Archival inkjet print, 2023, 120x80cm

The tiger found us, Archival inkjet print, 2023, 80x110cm

(The flesh of the world),不确定的身体触摸着周遭环境,将本体借给了世界。

Temporary Sanctuary, Archival inkjet print, 2023,100x78cm

The River, Archival inkjet print, 2022,77x65cm

· Artist Statement ·

My entire childhood was spent in the village, where I spent a significant amount of time in the company of animals.I have witnessed a domestic horse giving birth to a pony, and often spent time alone with cows, sheep, chickens and trees. The details of living with animals have remained in my mind for decades. It would be "Animals, land, and plants have been recurring themes in my subconscious, which has also served as a starting point for my creative work."

In the past ten years of my life, frequent moving and an unsettled state have made me ponder the interdependent relationship between the body, environment, and emotions dormant in different spaces. This creation started from my long-term home state in Shanghai but was also shot in each city's temporary "home." In a state of spatial isolation and migration, i reflect on myself, explore my identity, memory and spatial connection while gazing at fragility and summoning lost forces of life.

Crows drinking water is an animal's instinctive need, a direct display of desire, their own fragility and vitality. Yet beauty and danger exist side by side -- the seemingly beautiful images in the image can be on the verge of danger, and the trauma, conflict, and violence hidden in life can be condensed again to summon an ineffable vulnerability of the city and a lost primordial energy.

  ——Text/Lin Bai

· Preface ·

The connection to animals have always been her motivation for making images. The experience of talking to horses on a farm as a child leaves a homely de-anthropocentric perspective in her images. The animals in the White Lake farm as the subject of the narrative, fictional photography in an allegorical way to generate narrative, which makes the animals both poetic and wild temperament.

Whether a crow dying of thirst, burning horse hooves, or a chicken under a column of light - all respond to their environment with anthropomorphic rhetoric. The use of this rhetoric is thoroughly anthropocentric; animals are forced to experience the pain of desire through images. Farms function as cities for animals, and cities become cages for new classes.

The part of this series of images is created through digital rendering. This way of "making" images is free from "direct viewing" and " documentary ", and more free to explore childhood experiences with animals and plants. She combines making images with direct shooting to provide a visual experience between reality and fiction.

  2. White Lake Farm, Archival inkjet print, 2023, 120x80cm

"White Lake Farm" is a stability region depicted in the image. Although the artist recreated it based on memories of living on a family farm before the age of 15. But visualization offers more than just a sense of safe-house reliability, It's also full of tranquil dangers like those found in first-person survival games.

Bai Lin humanizes everything in her images, including not only the animals but also two bamboo shoot-like objects that are given skin and navel, closely situated in the village field. The perception of touch transitions from animal-organic to plant-based, similar to Merleau-Ponty's description of the flesh of the world. The uncertain body touches its surroundings and contributes its noumenon to the world.

As a legal place of abode for city dwellers, we often expect a rented house to be certain, private, and even capable of creating the illusion of 'home'. However, frequent moves in recent years and being confined to her home have forced her to reconsider the relationship between her body and residence.

Her creation appears intuitive. The contents of these images often reflect repeated thoughts in the mind, moments from the spiritual world, and a subconscious shaping and reconstruction of memory. However, the artist did not capture reality directly; instead, she carefully choreographed an Otherworld that fascinates her with eerie, serene, and dramatic scenes. By rearranging everyday objects to introduce defamiliarization into poetic language.
