Never seen before masterpieces at the TMOCA

The Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (TMOCA) is home to an impressive 3000-strong collection of contemporary and modern art that will go on display in a major exhibition, Portrait, Still-life,Landscape (21 February-20 April 2019), with a selection of around 400-500 works. Due to unstable political frictions, many works were lost or forgotten in the storage collection. Since the lift of international sanctions in 2015, Tmoca began showing its Western art again, and has since organized several local and international exhibitions. Mattijs Visser, a Dutch architect and curator, was asked to set up the exhibition which he described as doing “contemporary archeology”. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover never seen before artworks by Picasso, Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp, as well as other important Iranian artists.

EU imports new regulations

A leaked document on EU import regulations is alarming art dealers as increasing strain is put on the art market. The European Parliament has been pushing forward a series of new measures in an effort to combat money laundering in regard to the acquisition of artworks. In order to obtain an import license to enter a European country, importers will be required to identify the source country of cultural goods. Art dealers believe that the new EU requests will have a very negative impact on art trade. Artworks seldom ever stay in the possession of only one owner and therefore it can be nearly impossible to identify their original source or whether they were legally purchased.

近期欧盟一份关于调整进口法的保密文件泄露，引起艺术市场担忧。欧洲议会希望通过调整艺术品交易法规来实现反洗钱目的。根据这份提案，文化产品进入欧洲国家前，经销商需要证明其来源国和合法交易记录。艺术品经销商担心新的欧盟法规将给艺术品贸易造成负面影响。艺术品通常都经历过多次转手交易，想要证明它初始的来源国和合法交易的全部过程几乎是不可能完成的任务

Legal troubles around Picasso’s, The Actor

New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art has been embroiled in a legal battle over the ownership of The Actor (1904–05) by Pablo Picasso. The Alice Leffmann estate is seeking restitution of the painting after claiming that it was sold under duress during the Nazi era. The artwork was first sold in Italy in 1938 by German-Jewish collector Paul Leffmann for £13,200 to fund his escape with his wife Alice from the Mussolini regime. The painting was later donated to the Met in 1952 by American collector Thelma Chrysler Foy, who bought it in 1941 for $22,500. The case was dismissed in February, but the Leffmann estate has since filed an appeal stating the inconsistency of the federal court decision with the Holocaust Expropriated Art Recovery (HEAR) Act, which favors the recovery of Nazi-confiscated art to the victims and their families.

Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale: The Elements of Nature

This year’s Echigo-Tsumari Triennale in Japan is commanding attention with Periscope／Light Cave, an artistic restoration of the Kiyotsu Gorge tunnel by Ma Yansong, the founder of MAD, a Chinese architecture firm. Drawing inspiration from elements of nature, he designed several installations along a 750 meter mountainous passageway. The journey begins with a wood periscope through which the visitor peeps at the external environment. At the end of the tunnel, the reflection of trees and mountains appear on the mirrored walls and watered floor, bringing man and nature together as one.

跟着越后妻有大地艺术祭走进自然

日本的越后妻有大地艺术祭开幕，中国MAD建筑事务所的创始人马岩松在清津峡谷的所作的《光之隧道》引来诸多关注。设计师将大自然融进一条750米长的走廊，呈现出异彩纷呈的装置艺术。旅程从一段木质隧道开始，绿荫通过远处的狭口渗进观众的眼帘。装置的末端豁然开朗，镜面的墙和水面的地将洞外的树林引进洞里，天、水、林、人合而为一。

The Master or the Disciple?

New speculations have emerged regarding Leonardo Da Vinci’s, Salvator Mundi, sold for a record breaking $450 million to Abu Dhabi’s department of culture and tourism at Christie’s last year. In a forthcoming book, Oxford art historian, Matthew Landrus, claims that the artwork was primarily painted by Da Vinci’s assistant, Bernardino Luini, whose auction record is no more than $654,545. According to Landrus who has seen the Salvator Mundi twice, the details of the drapery and the robe of Jesus prove that they were painted by Luini. Leonardo only finished the painting using his signature technique, sfumato, to blend the colors and tones. In spite of these claims, the Masterpiece will debut at the Louvre Abu Dhabi this fall.

Gagosian Names Han-I Wang Senior Director in Hong Kong

Powerhouse Gagosian is looking to expand its presence and influence in Hong Kong as China’s art market continues to thrive. According to Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Reports, China accounted for 21% of the US$63 billion global art sales in 2017, a 12% rise from 2016. In a bid to stay competitive on the world’s No.2 art market, Gagosian has hired Han-I Wang, former vice president and contemporary art specialist at Hong Kong Sotheby’s, as the Gagosian new senior director in Hong Kong.

Ai Wei Wei Omnipresence

This autumn, three Los Angeles galleries will host large-scale Ai Wei Wei exhibitions. Art dealer Jeffrey Deitch will present pieces from the Zodiac(2010), Stools (2013) and The Animal That Looks Like a Llama But is Really An Alpac (2015) collections, with some items priced between €280,000 and €4.1m. United Talent Agency, who has been representing Ai Wei Wei since 2016, will display some of the Chinese artist’s work in marble, including Cao (2014) at its newly opened venue, UTA Artist Space. Finally, the Marciano Art Foundation will show several sculptures includingLife Cycle (2018), made by Ai Wei Wei in address to the global refugee crisis. One could say that Ai Wei Wei is doing very well on the art scene. However, some commentators believe that the overexposure of his work may blur the fine line in between the artist’s activism and commercial activity.

Artprice Report: China is leading the Art Market

According to the latest Artprice H1 2018 Global Art Market Report, the global auction turnover on Fine Art has gone up 18%, totaling $8.45 billion. The amount of transactions has remained stable, with 262,000 Fine Arts lots sold at auctions, a 2.5% increase from 2017. The Chinese market is still taking the world by storm with a $2 billion turnover. Among Chinese artists,  Zao Wou-Ki sold the most in the first half of 2018 ranking 6th on the Top20 list, with total sales of $155 million. China has gone up to a prominent position on the art market, with 128 Chinese artists listed on the Top 500 best performing artists, far beyond the USA (82) and Great Britain (27).

Artprice发布的2018年上半年数据显示，全球艺术品拍卖成交额增长18%，总计84.5亿美元。交易数量保持稳定，成交262,000手交易，较2017年上半年增长2.5%。中国艺术品交易额为20亿美元，其中，艺术家赵无极的作品在上半年销售额最高，达到1.55亿美元。而在以销售产品为衡量标准的全球500强艺术家榜单中，中国共有128位艺术家上榜，远超美国（82位）和英国（27位），可见中国在艺术市场的重要地位。
