LIF

Logo

Logo

Love conquers, little by little, day by day

In this special time, the students in BIBA LIF Club devote their love and passion to the country, interpreting the meaning of public welfare, a unique experience for this group of young students.

Edward Oh G9- Chairman of LIF

When I, along with a couple of my fellow students started the LIF club last year, I wanted to help and improve our school lives the best we could. And in a couple of ways, we have- helping our plastic burdened school environment by hosting a plastic recycling project, or by starting a debate tournament to help our students in their debating skills. And with our online learning lessons, we wish to extend our help to those even outside of our school. As the LIF Club's Chairman, I wish to sincerely thank my fellow members and the BIBA community for giving us the many opportunities for our projects.

LIF is a student-led group which was established in May 2019. It’s full name is ‘Life is fascinating’. LIF works to improve student life on campus. Since its founding, activities such as contest to recycle plastic bottles and public debate have been held. The club members include:Edward Oh(Wu Rumin) G9, River Li(Li Runpu) G9, Luke Hamlin G9, and Dennis Kuijpers G9, Tommy(Tao Ziyuan) G9, Sherwin (Wang Xi yuan) G9, Stephanie(An Mucheng) G8, Lenny (Wang Lingyi)G8, and Justin Hamlin G7.

LIF, which stands for: “Life is fascinating”, was founded by Edward Oh with several classmates in May 2019. LIF is dedicated to helping and improving many aspects of students’ campus life. LIF has nine key members with their own responsibilities and a team of more than 20 volunteers. The LIF club tries to follow its mission by starting various projects. From October to December, LIF started a MSHS-wide Plastic Recycling Competition. LIF students saw the overwhelming use of plastic bottles in BIBA and wanted to find a fun and interesting way to reduce and recycle plastic in our school community. Each homeroom class collected plastic bottles in a cardboard box, and each week LIF students would count and collect the bottles before sending them off to a recycling plant. Edward and River started planning and executing the school-wide project, and Luke handled the logistics by securing cardboard boxes and also worked on videos etc. Other members also actively took part by counting bottles and collecting them. As a result of two months, more than 12,000 bottles were recycled. The winning homeroom class also received a pizza party for the grand prize :)

LIF is also currently working on organizing a in-school debate tournament, with aims to give students an opportunity to practice their debating skills in a friendly environment. They are currently signing up students interested in debating. Encourages MSHS students to sign up!

In this uncertain time of the cornavirus epidemic, the students of the LIF club thought of an interesting idea.

If ideas stay as ideas,

they are worthless.

Due to the epidemic, everyone was on edge. LIF members were scattered across different countries and cities, yet engaged themselves in discussions about whether they could do something in this outbreak by using their expertise to help as many people as much as possible. The new project the LIF club started planning was an online English lesson course. As everyone was stuck at home due to the Coronavirus, LIF members thought it was a good idea to use an online platform to help improve people's English and to use time efficiently. Edward, River, Tommy, Sherwin, Lenny, and Stephanie started to teach and plan the online courses.

Little by Little

Well begun is half done. More LIF members joined the teaching team including students who were abroad. From topic choices and PPT creation, to research and fact checking, every class takes a lot of energy, but the members enjoy working together. Sherwin adopted innovative word root methods to help with memorization, which was very popular with younger learners. Subsequently, they also launched the IPA class, one-on-one sessions, junior/senior writing class, oral English, historical events and more.

In just 9 days from February 1 to February 9, LIF provided classes for nearly fifty students with a total of forty hours of online teaching hours.

The online teaching classes brought the group of teenagers closely together. Whilst improving their English, the LIF members have become a positive influence on younger students and have become an example of facing life with positivity. Through teaching, they deepened and broadened their knowledge domain and harvested friendship.

Actions speak louder

Blue and yellow interweaved as a light bulb in the Club logo symbolizes innovation and also illumination. The two color choice follows BIBA’s main colors.

LIF members also designed a corresponding logo for the Online English Class. The new is designed to look similar to the LIF club logo.

The LIF Chairman, Edward ,who also teaches abroad from South Korea, expressed that LIF wanted to do what they could to help and improve campus life and gave special thanks to all the members of the LIF committee as well as the BIBA community, for turning the LIF ideas into reality.

Charity is not only a kind of social responsibility, but also a kind of action. Charity has no boarders. LIF members demonstrated love and charity through their actions.

The book of “Qing Feng· Wu Yi” left a legacy for later generations with an expression of friendship and an idiom meaning: “Be united as one”. Like the members of LIF, they are classmates as well as colleagues and in the midst of a silent battle. They faced a difficult situation head on, and put ideas into practice, believing that love and hope would spread faster than the virus.
