What We Do
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
The ICRC Regional Delegation for East Asia covers China, DPRK, South Korea, and Mongolia. The delegation's main task is to promote awareness and implementation of international humanitarian law, the legal framework that seeks to minimize human suffering caused by war. The delegation also aims to familiarize governments, experts, national Red Cross societies and civil society with the ICRC's humanitarian work and emergency response around the world.
Role Description
This is a role focusing on legal translation. The role will be part of the translation team. S/he will translate, revise and proofread IHL related texts, documents, and books. Her/his translation shall demonstrate professional quality and legal expertise, and shall also meet publication standard. S/he should be able to master the comprehension of very academic and theoretical ideas such as those elaborated in papers of International Review of the Red Cross. S/he should also have good research skills that contribute to deliver a professional legal translation on technical pieces such as the Common Article 3 to the Geneva Convention. S/he will also participate in non-legal translation projects and provide interpretation support when such tasks are assigned to her/him. S/he will work closely with the senior legal translator, report to her and the Head of Translation.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Carry out complex verbal and written translations from and into English, especially those that require legal expertise
Proofread, revise translated documents to meet publication standard
Provide professional level interpretations in conferences, meetings, and for delegates' field trips
Perform other tasks assigned by the Head of the Translation Unit that includes freelancer management, admin tasks and sometimes, editorial assistance tasks
Drafts and types complex correspondence in English from and into Chinese independently
Desired Profile and Skills
University degree or similar specialized institute, advanced degree is highly desired
Must have legal education background. Specialty in international law and international humanitarian law is highly desired
3 years' work experience in a similar function
Fluent in spoken & written English
Capable of high quality professional level translation and interpretation
Very Good project management and coordination skills
Very Good communication skills. Able to meet deadlines
Good computer skills
