No charges will be filed against Chinese businessman Liu Qiangdong for an alleged sexual assault.
◉ VOA:
No Charges for Chinese Billionaire Accused of Rape
Minnesota prosecutors decided not to charge Liu after a Chinese college student accused him of sexual assault.
charge
和动词(v.),表示“指控,控告”,英文解释为“(n.) an official statement by the police that someone may be guilty of a crime. (v.) to state officially that someone may be guilty of a crime”;(If the police charge someone, they officially tell that person that they are believed to be guilty of a crime and that they must go to court.)
(n.) He was found guilty of all three charges against him.
(v.) He has been charged with murder.
accuse
accuse也是“指控,控告”的意思,英文解释为“to say that you believe someone is guilty of a crime or of doing something bad”,举个🌰:
He faced a total of three charges, all accusing him of lying in his testimony.
indict
表示“控告,起诉”,英文解释为“to officially charge someone with a criminal offence”,举个🌰:
He was later indicted on corruption charges.
He was indicted for vehicular homicide.
◉ 纽约时报(New York Times):
标题:JD.com Chief Richard Liu Will Not Be Charged With Sexual Assault
导语:In Minnesota, the Hennepin County attorney's office said that it did not find enough evidence to pursue a sexual assualt case against Mr. Liu.
◉ 路透社(Reuters):
标题:JD.com CEO will not face assault charges in Minnesota
导语:Minnesota prosecutors will not charge the billionaire chief executive officer of China's JD.com Inc, Richard Liu, after he was accused of rape by a University of Minnesota student during a recent U.S. visit, authorities said on Friday.
可以看到这些报道标题都大同小异,用的都是charge:won't be charged/ will not be charged/ won't face rape charge等等。
(Daily Mail):
◉ PerthNow:
clear
的嫌疑”,英文解释为“to prove that someone is not guilty of something that they were accused of”,举个🌰:
He was cleared after new evidence was produced.
guilty
可以注意到,clear及前面的英文解释中还提到一个说法be guilty of/ be not guilty of,我们再来看看guilty的英文解释:responsible for breaking a law,表示“有过失的,犯了罪的,有罪责的”,举个🌰:
A person accused of a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
innocent
例句中又冒出一个词innocent,其实是和guilty相对的,表示“清白的,无罪的”,英文解释为“not guilty of a crime”,举个🌰:
He's innocent of murder.
◉ BBC:
标题:JD.com chief Liu Qiangdong will not face rape charges
Liu Qiangdong, the chief executive of Chinese e-commerce company JD.com, will not face sexual assault charges after his arrest in the US in September.
Mr. Liu
Liu Qiangdong, the chief executive of Chinese e-commerce company JD.com
JD.com chief Richard Liu
JD.com CEO
the billionaire chief executive officer of China's JD.com Inc, Richard Liu
JD.com's billionaire founder Richard Liu
Chinese billionaire Liu ...
Prosecutors said they had not found enough evidence to charge Mr Liu after he was accused of raping a Chinese student at the University of Minnesota. He denied wrongdoing and was released less than a day later to return to China.
"As is the case in many sexual assault incidents, it was a complicated situation," Hennepin County attorney Mike Freeman announced in a statement. The county said there were "profound evidentiary problems" which would have made proving the allegations in court "highly unlikely".
According to Forbes, Mr Liu currently has a net worth of $5.3bn (£4.2 bn). His arrest caused shock in China, where people speculated on social media that Mr Liu had been set up.
set up
表示“陷害;诬陷”,英文解释为“If you are set up by someone, they make it seem that you have done something wrong when you have not.”,举个🌰:
He claimed yesterday that he had been set up after drugs were discovered at his home.
The company has faced recent troubles, announcing in November that its customer base had shrunk for the first time since 2014. Its shares hit an 18-month low the week after his arrest.
shrink
所谓的“缩水”,表示“(使)(数量、体积或价值)变小,减少,缩小”,英文解释为“to become smaller, or to make something smaller”,举个🌰:
The company's profits have shrunk from $5 million to $1 million.
shrink还可以指“畏缩,退缩”,英文解释为:to move away from someone or something because you are frightened.
She listened, shrinking under the blankets, to their shouts.
shrink from sth表示“逃避,躲避(令人不快或困难的事)”,英文解释为:to avoid doing something that is unpleasant or difficult,举个🌰:
We must not shrink from our responsibilities.
