Netizens bash David Beckham’s son over ‘racist’ Instagram post

David Beckham’s son has now become the latest Western celebrity to feel the wrath of enraged Chinese netizens after being accused of posting “racist” photos onto his Instagram account.

Brooklyn Beckham, a 19-year-old model with some 11.5 million followers on Instagram, had shared a pair of photos from his trip to Venice. One showed a group of Asian tourists in a gondola and the other showed an Asian woman shopping at a local supermarket. The photos were captioned, “No place like Italy innit.”

In a short matter of time, Chinese net users caught wind of Beckham’s post and bombarded his account with angry comments, accusing him of holding racist views of Chinese and Asian people, while also reminding him that he was a tourist in Italy as well.

Soon, Beckham deleted the posts and switched his Instagram account over to being private.

However, that has not stopped the furor and outrage from spreading as netizens have since taken to Weibo to express their indignation and attack Beckham. “Without your parents, you wouldn’t be anything. Just a 19-year-old loser dropout,” reads one popular comment.

Some have called on Beckham to apologize while others have warned him against ever trying to make money in China again. Back in 2016, Beckham starred in an advertisement for Huawei’s Honor 8 smartphone, earning himself more than $130,000.

Beckham’s dad is extremely popular in China and boasts a number of lucrative endorsement deals. In 2013, he was appointed as a global ambassador for Chinese football. While some have expressed their concern over his parenting, it’s not clear if the backlash against his son will also hurt him.

Neither father nor son has yet commented on the controversy.

Last year, superstar model Gigi Hadid got into some big trouble in China over an Instagram video that showed her holding up a Buddha-shaped cookie and making “squinty-eyes.” When the incident failed to simply blow over, Hadid issued an apology, saying that she has the “utmost respect and love for the people of China.”

However, the apology came too little, too late for most Chinese net users, who accused the supermodel of being “racist” and caused her to become blacklisted from the Victoria’s Secret fashion show in Shanghai later that year.
