Andrey Shatilov, born in 1987 in Akhtubinsk, is a famous contemporary young satirical oil painting artist in Russia. When he was born, the once-great Soviet Union was in its twilight years. By the time he was five years old, this giant had completely disintegrated into fifteen countries. 


安德烈·沙蒂洛夫1987年出生于俄罗斯的阿赫图宾斯克市,是俄罗斯著名的当代青年讽刺油画艺术家。在他出生的时候,曾经伟大的苏联已经步入垂垂暮年。在他五岁的时候,这个庞然巨物彻底解体,分裂成了十五个国家。 


As we all know, Russia then entered the age of oligarchy and a long economic slump, with declining quality of life. It was definitely not a good social environment, as Andrey Shatilov grew up, and it left a deep impression on him. 


之后的事情大家都知道,俄罗斯进入了寡头时代和经济的长期低迷,人们生活质量不断降低。可以说,这种绝对称不上是良好的社会环境,伴随着安德烈·沙蒂洛夫逐渐长大,并给他留下了深刻的记忆。

So we can see the shadow of suffering in his painting works. Andrey Shatilov has always been sensitive to the problems brought about by the changes in social development. He often focuses his painting perspective on the social and political evolution of Russia and the social problems caused by it.

And it's not just about political change, sometimes we can even read his works in the larger context of the times. The global problems brought about by industrialization, informatization and globalization do not belong only to Russia. Along with rapid economic development, many new social problems have emerged in places we had not expected, such as global epidemics, environmental pollution, and consumerism. All these problems are global. 


也不仅仅是政治变迁,有的时候我们甚至可以从更宏大的时代背景出发,去解读他的作品。工业化、信息化和全球化的带来的全球问题,并不只属于俄罗斯。在经济快速发展的同时,在我们原先意料之外的地方也产生了许多新的社会问题,比如全球疫情、环境污染、消费主义。这些问题都是全球性的。

Andrey Shatilov's paintings are mostly portraits of ordinary people in the midst of these problems of the times. And in his paintings, we can see his empathy for the lives of ordinary people, and his painting works are full of humanistic concern. The characters in his paintings are often surreal. However, if combined with the context of the times, it is possible to understand the social problems he wants to expose, and it is precisely because of this, that his works have attracted considerable attention. 


安德烈·沙蒂洛夫的画作大部分是肖像画,主角就是身处这些时代问题之中的普通人。在他的画里我们可以看到他对普通人生活的感同身受,其作品也因此充满了人文主义关怀。在他的画中,人物的形象经常是超现实主义的。但是如果结合了时代的语境,就能够读懂他所想揭露的社会问题,他的作品也正是因为如此而颇受关注。

For example, "Bon Appetite." In the mid-1980s, the Soviet Union's economy was already in serious trouble, having been severely overstretched by the Cold War with the United States. Gorbachev came to power in March 1985, taking over as general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party and launching his failed economic reforms. As part of its market-oriented economic reforms, the Soviet Union introduced the Western icon of fast food, McDonald's. 


比如在这幅《吃好喝好》。在上世纪八十年代中叶,在与美国的冷战中严重透支了国家实力的苏联,当时经济已经处于严重的困境。1985年3月,戈尔巴乔夫上台,接任成为苏共中央总书记,并开始了他失败的经济改革。作为经济市场化改革的一部分,苏联引入了西方标志性快餐——麦当劳。

The first McDonald's officially opened in Moscow's Pushkin Square in 1990 and immediately sparked a buying spree, with an estimated 38,000 people queuing in front of the restaurant on the day. That's a scary number. For the former Soviet Union, it was a scene of deep irony. The United States had defeated the Soviet Union, but the people of the Soviet Union couldn't resist eating a hamburger made by their number one enemy. Like the little girl in the painting, who is about the same age as Andrey Shatilov at that time, she shows off her burger by lifting up her dress as a way to show her scars. The sense of pride and honor in the hearts of the great Soviet Union was gone, and the eyes were filled with bitterness and helplessness. 


第一家麦当劳于1990年在莫斯科的普希金广场上正式开业,并迅速引发了人们的购买热潮,当天估计有38000人在店铺门前排队。这是一个恐怖的数字。对前苏联来讲,这也是极为讽刺的一幕。美国搞垮了苏联,但苏联的人民却忍不住要吃一个由他们头号敌人制作的汉堡。正如图片中的小女孩,她与那时的安德烈·沙蒂洛夫年龄相仿,用掀起衣服给人看身上伤疤的动作展示着自己吃下的汉堡。人们心中对伟大国家的自豪感与荣誉感不复存在,眼里充满了苦涩和无奈。 


In the painting "Capital Spartakiad," a young man dressed in a Mickey Mouse costume is presumed to be the father of the child. He would most likely be working at the funfair, but the work has taken all his enthusiasm away from him, and he looks exhausted just lying there. Although the child would like to participate in such a celebration, it is likely that the father will not be able to fulfill his son's wish because he is too tired. 


在这幅《首都运动会》中,身着迪士尼米老鼠服装的年男子,推测他是小孩子的父亲。他很有可能在游乐场盛大庆典中工作,但工作已经夺走了他的全部热情,半躺在做以上的他看起来非常疲惫。虽然孩子也想参加这样的庆典,但身心俱疲的他很有可能没有办法满足儿子的愿望。

Mickey Mouse also comes from what used to be called ‘the West’, but the introduction of the Western model has not reinvigorated Russia's economy, which can be interpreted as a frustration with this political path. Or to put it another way, this is reminiscent of Karl Marx's theory of "human alienation". In contemporary society, we devote more of our life to work and forget about ourselves and accompanying our family. 


米老鼠同样来自曾经所谓的西方,但引入西方模式并没有使俄罗斯重新焕发经济活力,我们可以理解为这是对这种政治路径的一种失望。或者换一个角度,这同样令人联想到马克思所提出的“人的异化”的理论,在当代社会之中,我们把更多的人生奉献给了工作,而忘记了自我和陪伴家庭。


In addition to this, there is another series of Andrey Shatilov's paintings, called ‘ Familiar Faces’. Instead of depicting the lives of ordinary people, in this series, he focuses more on celebrities who have made an impact on society, such as Marilyn Monroe, Cristiano Ronaldo, Yuri Gagarin, and Vladimir Putin. 


除此之外,安德烈·沙蒂洛夫的画还有另外一个系列,名字是熟悉的面孔。与描绘普通人生活的画作不同,在这个系列之中,他更关注的则是对社会已经产生影响的社会名人,像玛丽莲梦露、C罗、尤里·加加林和普京。

Andrey Shatilov creatively combines newspaper fragments with oil paintings to strengthen the work's expression of popular culture. It can be said that social celebrities represent the context of social change from another level, which also maintains the consistency of social observation attributes in his works.
