Li Nu's project El otro, el mismo

text by Liao Liao

Experimental Writing and Contemporary Art is an exhibition serie curated by Mino in M'Studio this year. Since Jorge Luis Borges was one of the enlightened teachers of Chinese experimental novel, it’s obviously appropriate to use the imagery in his works to interpret the probability of a certain relationship or commonality between the experimental writing and contemporary art. However, instead of the time maze in The Garden of Forking Paths which was famous in China, what I, a curator and an artist, Li Nu, borrowes the name of Borges' poems "El otro, el mismo" as the same name of this project, intend to explore through the work is an other image that Borges indulgesin: the mirror (or copy).

In M'Studio, Li Nu set a group of same wigged and same clothed people, carrying out daily activities in the same identity (everyone is imitating Mino) as if countless mirror images superimposing and reflecting themselves.

We cannot distinguish the real "Mino" fromimitator, just like Borges put it: “The image is the object and the object is imitating itself.” It can be also said, Mino is imitating herself, that is,“copy oneself, imitate oneself, without an end”. If the original essence of artis imitation and reflection to the object itself, all of the thoughts and actions are presented a reflection relationship in no particular order when we cannot find the imitation, the original female parent as well as the copy one.Time is overlapped and chaotic, namely “Imitation is no longer the only factor of art, it is also determined by memory and imagination”.

The same people in Li Nu's works refer to more than themirror and copy of Borges. If Borges was more of a game of language and puzzle of text, Baudrillard extended the concept of imitation in his Simulacra and Simulation to a reality level.

Baudrillard mentioned Borges in Simulacra and Simulationand expanded his copy theory. He believed that the simulacra came first, the difference between reality and model disappeared, model generated reality and gave birth to the hyper-reality. We have entered the Age of Simulation, characterized by real symbol replacing the reality itself. Just as the imitatorin the work may become the original edition itself, in the hyper-real world, there is no truth or fake, no right or wrong, no good or evil, everything right is wrong, everything wrong is right. Virtual reality and real virtualization, this is today's simulacra society. Objects and their symbolic symbols construct the world together, building a consumer society, symbol society.

If writing and text make up a world, just as the art does, the virtual world will be created by VR. Borges, who has become a history, thought more philosophical while the simulacra society is the reality of what is happening where as the mirror world is what will happen in the future. (The VR mirror world has yet to be realized, still being experimented with by super-giants such as Apple and General Electric) People are making a 1:1 virtual mirror world, in which everything in the real world can be represented. The VR mirror worlds as a copy of the real world, provides countless fantasy and possibility, its creativity and productivity can be comparable to the industrial revolution or the internet technology, VR mirrorworld will create a myriad of opportunities, but also brings new problems——this is the realistic meaning of mirror space created in Li Nu's work.

Back to the topic of experimental writing and contemporary art, Li Nu uses the vision and touch of contemporary art to express the reflection on Borges' mirror and copy, simulacra society and the VR mirror world that we previously imagined in words. The visual image of Li Nu's works is easier to make us feel the meaning of the concept rather than abstract words, but it cannot be said that artists interpret experimental writing with contemporary art, but only through Li Nu's works, we could find the language overlap with contemporary art and experimental writing, and there are many possibilities for the exchange of artistic conception.

Besides the specific text, Li Nu also explore the identity in the background of experimental writing and contemporary art from another perspective. Born after the World War II, the post-modern fiction (experimental writing) actually has the same historical background with the post-war art. The post-war sculpture, painting, conceptual art, movies, music, drama and other generalized form of art have profoundly changed, same as the experimental fiction, went to the characteristics of deconstructed, de-authority, de-grand-narrative, fragmentized, de-centered, anti-traditional of the post-modernism - and Li Nu works in the manufacturing of the appearanceof unified it is with this in the same cultural atmosphere under the theme of identity of art.

In addition to the mirror image and copy of experimental writing, Li Nu's works have more realistic significance as well. Under the centralism control, pluralist identity is often unified in order to establish agreat imperial unity culture and the group cohesiveness. In the context of globalization, people’s consumption, interest, life form, even valueorientation in different races, countries, and cultural identities are becoming more and more unified, aspiring to create an imaginary community. These themes may not be directly related to experimental writing, but as a work full of energy, it’s also proper to refer beyond its original subject after the energy overflows.
