Traces of Time
The Opposite House presents the
art installation "Traces of Time"
by artist Qiao Zhenyi,
inspired by washboards - a traditional Chinese washing utensil.
The utilitarian washboard is imbued with traces of traditional Chinese women's labor, carrying the simple virtues of a routine and dedicated work ethic. The social meanings derived from the rugged texture of the ordinary wooden washboard are enhanced in the form of contemporary objets.
The uniqueness of this 'new' media allows people from different times and backgrounds to touch, to rub and to play with the re-purposed traces of humanity, allowing them to draw inspiration to navigate the changing times of today.
The pen can be the most powerful weapon of any time. By raising this great ball spiked with pencil tips, a delicate question is postulated. At once, the hammer represents inherent power and possible threat. At once, the pen provides the opportunity for a more nuanced consideration offering a viable and sustainable path forward.
People with initiative are willing to create something with their own hands - even when presented with a piano. It does not matter whether those hands are trained or untrained, or how the same hands scrub away on a washboard. As long as the playing is pure and the scrubbing diligent, the owner of those hardworking hands will be respected.
Like the tree rings of the tree section, the texture of a washboard retains the memory of the objet’s longevity. Many hands have smoothed the wooden surface, protecting the history with warmth and tenderness.
