深入解读

Wedge 一词比较好记，就是在熟词 edge （边缘、刀口）前面加个 w ，原本作名词表示“楔子、三角木”（如下图）。

楔子是一种简单机械工具，由两个斜面组成，用来将物件分开，常由木头、金属、橡胶等制作而来。比如：

• 那个著名建筑师用锤子把楔子砸入石缝里。
  The eminent architect hammered the wedge into the crack in the stone.
• 在门底下塞一个楔子让门敞开着，我们好往里面搬微型人像画框的箱子。
  Push a wedge under the door to keep it open while we're carrying the boxes of portrait miniature frames in.

从其形状来说，还可以引申指“楔形物、三角形物”，多用来形容蛋糕、奶酪、水果等食物，比如：

• 玛丽姨妈把一大角的蛋糕放在我盘子里。
  Auntie Mary put a huge wedge of cake on my plate.

从其作用而言，则发展出来习惯表达 drive a wedge between sb 表示“挑拨离间、破坏……之间的关系”，以及习语 the thin end of the wedge 表示坏事的“端倪、冰山一角”，比如：

• 我开始觉得威廉在挑拨我们之间的关系。他对我们之间的友谊打心眼儿讨厌。
  I started to feel William was driving a wedge between us. He has a visceral dislike of our friendship.

而用作动词时， wedge 自然表示“用楔子楔住、楔牢”或者“将……挤入、塞进或插入”，多指把某物紧紧地塞进或挤进狭窄的空间，使之不能轻易移动，比如：

• 找个什么东西楔住这个紧闭的窗户，让它开着。
  Find something to wedge the fast window open with.
• 我正站着等公共汽车，夹在两位上了年纪的女士和她们的豪华购物袋中间，动弹不得。
  I was standing waiting for a bus, wedged between two old ladies and their lavish bags of shopping.

另外值得注意的是， wedge 作名词时还可以表示“（击高尔夫球的）楔形铁头球杆”，以及常用复数 wedges 表示整个鞋底都有鞋跟的“坡跟鞋”（见下图）。
