其中， anguish 一词源自拉丁语 angustia （紧、狭窄、窄小），13世纪经古法语 anguisse, angoisse （窒息感、痛苦、焦虑、愤怒）进入英语后，即用来表示肉体上的“剧痛”或精神上的“极度痛苦、悲痛”，常作正式用语使用，多指一种令人难以忍受或者说折磨得几乎无法承受的且持久的痛苦，比如：
