英语 to foster 的意思是 to take sb else’s child into your home for a period of time, without becoming his or her legal parent (s)，即“帮助抚养别人寄养的孩子，但不成为其法定父母，实际上是“代养一段时间”，不是“领养”。to adopt 的意思是 to take sb else’s child into your family and become its legal parent (s)，即"收养别人的孩子，成为其法定父母”，才是“领养”。
“领养”“认养”和“收养”的第一个意思是"通过法定手续认领别人的孩子，当作自己的子女抚养”。英语可以译为 to adopt，adoption, to take in and bring up。例如：
1.这对无子女夫妇从孤儿院认养了一个女儿。
This childless couple adopted a daughter from the orphanage.
