Doctors Find Spider – and Web – Inside Chinese Man’s Ear
By Nassir Ali
It’s the stuff of nightmares: a spider spinning a super-tiny web in your ear. It sounds far fetched, but this exact situation recently unfolded in the northern Chinese city of Dalian, IB Times reports.
The man, who is not named in the report, arrived at a hospital in Dalian last Saturday, September 1, complaining of “drum-like” pounding sounds in his left ear, according to ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. Cui Shulin, per IB Times.
“I felt discomfort in my ear while sleeping last night but I tried to ignore it. This morning the discomfort was still there. There were noises like something was beating a drum,” stated the man, according to the Sun.
Upon examination, it became clear that an unwanted, eight-legged guest had taken up residence in the man’s ear: a spider. Amazingly, the arachnid was discovered over 5-centimeters into the man’s ear canal.
In addition to simply being in the man’s ear, the spider had also spun an intricate network of webs to “shield itself,” according to the Sun.

The arachnid was successfully flushed from the patient’s ear canal using water, and reports indicate that the man’s ear was unharmed during the cringe-worthy ordeal.
This is far from the first time an insect has taken up residence in someone’s ear canal. Just last month, a woman in the South China city of Dongguan had a cockroach removed from her ear. The insect had reportedly been living in her head for two days.
And back in June, a Guangdong resident was subjected to a similar gut-wrenching experience when a live, 2-centimeter-long cockroach was removed from his ear.
Now, go invest in some ear plugs!
