No.1 Org. Setting and Reporting
The Social Development Division/ Sustainable Socioeconomic Transformation Section internship is for 2-4 months with an opportunity for extension up to 6 months, pending on the needs of the department.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Sustainable Socio-economic Transformation Section.
The Social Development Division consist of three sections namely 1) Sustainable Demographic Transition Section (SDTS); 2) Sustainable Socioeconomic Transformation Section (SETS) and 3) Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Section (GESIS) covering the thematic areas of inequality and social protection, population dynamics, ageing, migration, gender equality, disability and youth.
SETS covers the thematic areas of poverty reduction, financing for social development, inequality and social protection and has a team made up of professional and general service staff with experience in diverse socioeconomic fields. Communication is valued and team members are encouraged to think analytically and also find creative ways to address problems.
No.2 Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Drafting policy briefs and other shorter outreach communications for promoting the sections products and material, primarily on areas including poverty reduction, inequality and social protection, with a focus on people in vulnerable situations such as persons with disabilities, migrants, youth, older persons and women.
- Drafting presentation materials and background information for use at relevant events and conferences.
- Assisting in organizing and convening meetings/seminars/workshops, including contributing to backgrounds papers and attending to other relevant preparations.
- Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

-Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary

No.4 Education
Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:
1) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
2) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
3) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of different opinions and views.
Studies in social science, economics or other relevant areas required.
No.5 Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Nonetheless, experience in sustainable development or related area would be an advantage.
No.6 Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of an another official UN language is desirable.
No.7 Assessment
Potential candidates will be contacted by hiring manager directly for further consideration.
No.8 Special Notice
Your application for this internship must include:
1. A completed application (Personal History Profile) through the United Nations careers portal. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. In your Personal History Profile (PHP), be sure to include all past work experiences, IT skills, and three references.
2. An accompanying letter (cover note) that includes:
-Title of the degree you are currently studying.
-Graduation date (when you will graduate from the programme).
-List the IT skills and programmes that you are proficient in.
-Explain why you are the best candidate for the internship and what you hope to gain from the internship.
3. A letter from your university clearly indicating the status of your enrollment, programme you are enrolled in and the anticipated date of graduation from the programme.
4. A certified copy of the degree certificate (if already graduated).
