Org. Setting and Reporting


The Office of Administration of Justice (OAJ) is an independent office responsible for the overall coordination of the formal system of administration of justice at the United Nations (the internal justice system for addressing workplace disputes). It is headed by an Executive Director appointed by the Secretary-General and includes the Office of the Executive Director (OED), the Registries of the United Nations Dispute Tribunal (UNDT) and the United Nations Appeals Tribunal (UNAT) which support the judges, and the Office of Staff Legal Assistance (OSLA) which provides legal assistance to staff members.

OED is responsible for the management and administration of OAJ, advises the Secretary-General on systemic issues relating to the administration of internal justice and coordinates the preparation of reports of the Secretary-General to the General Assembly on issues relating to administration of justice.

The internship is in the OED, for three (3) months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the team. Applicants are encouraged to highlight their specific skills and/or experience. They are asked to do so carefully in order to enhance the value of the internship for both themselves and the receiving office. The internship is unpaid and can be either part-time or full-time depending on your status. Interns work four to five days per week (20-35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in OAJ.

Responsibilities


Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

- Assist in the review of business and user needs and generating design and system specifications for OAJ computer systems;

- Assist in the establishment/development of testing framework for OAJ applications

- Assist in the data capture, data entry, information management and maintenance of the caselaw database.

- Generate information graphics to support decision makers in their understanding of workflows;

- Assist with the compilation and analysis of statistics on emerging trends in the system of administration of justice;

- Assist with physical inventory of hardware and material and write-off procedures; and

- Perform other duties and IT functions as necessary.

Education


To qualify for consideration for an internship by the United Nations Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

(1) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or

(2) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or

(3) Have graduated with a university degree as defined in (1) and (2) above; and

(4) Be computer literate in standard software applications, including database management, PowerPoint and Excel;

(5) Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and,

(6) Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience


No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English is required; Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Special Notice


Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.

Please Note That Start and End Dates Are Flexible

We recruit interns throughout the year for assignments of at least 3 months with the possibility of extension. In your cover note, please indicate when you would like to start your internship.

• Fall (September to December)

• Winter/Spring (January to April)

• Summer (May to August)

The Cover Note Must Include

• Degree Programme (What are you currently studying)

• Graduation Date (When will you graduate or when did you graduate from the programme)

• List the skills and programmes that you are proficient in

• List your top three areas of interest.

• Explain why you are the best candidate for this specific internship
