“Not a Nation of Immigrants: Settler Colonialism, White Supremacy, and a History of Erasure and Exclusion”As an analysis of the construction of race and racism, this forthcoming book is an autopsy of the construction of settler-colonialism demonstrating both the historical inaccuracy as well as the strategic blind spot created by thinking of the United States as a 'nation of immigrants.' 
It also links the construction of the United States as a racial settler state with the growth of United States’ imperialism, demonstrating that global expansion was not accidental nor a matter of policy alone, but the direct outcome of the DNA of the racial settler state. 
It demonstrates how profoundly the settler-colonial history of the United States and the ideology of white nativism has shaped both immigration policy and immigrant identity.

Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz is professor emerita of Ethnic Studies at California State University, East Bay.She is the author of numerous books and articles, including Roots of Resistance: A History of Land Tenure in New Mexico; The Great Sioux Nation; and An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States, which received the 2015 American Book Award. 
Her forthcoming book is Not "A Nation of Immigrants": Settler Colonialism, White Supremacy, and a History of Erasure and Exclusion (Beacon Press, 2021).
