Nowadays the increasing use of remote-controlled mini drones has become a real threat to the air traffic management. They may be misused for criminal acts or even terrorist attacks, and pose serious threats for the public security. Thus, accurate detection and classification of mini drones are highly essential and critical. Comparing to other types of sensors, radars show superior performance for their wide, long-range and rapid surveillance capabilities in all weather conditions, which are therefore widely adopted as an effective sensor to detect the drones. It is well known that the micro-Doppler signatures generated by the drones’ rotating blades have been popularly used for the drone detection and classification in many literatures. However, the behaviors of micro-Doppler of drones vary significantly for different radar operating modes. It may not be easy to capture the micro-Doppler signatures of drone in the real scenarios. This talk addresses the practical issues for drone detection as well as the suitable radar-based solutions for countering the drone’s threat in urban environment.

Hongbo Sun received his B.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees from Nanjing University of Science and Technology, China, in 1997 and 2002, respectively. He joined the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, in 2002, as a Research Fellow. Between July 2004 and October 2019, he was with Temasek Laboratories at NTU as Research Scientist (2004-2008), Senior Research Scientist (2008-2019) and Programme Manager (2019). In October 2019, he joined the Institute for Infocomm Research, Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore, as a Senior Scientist. Dr. Sun's research interests lie on advanced radar system and radar signal processing. He has authored/co-authored one book chapter and more than 80 technical papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings. Since 2015, he has been serving as the Associate Editor for Electronics Letters, and had ever been the Guest Associate Editor for an IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letter Special Stream (2015-2017). He is the Senior Member of IEEE and the past Chairman of IEEE AES/GRS Joint Singapore Chapter (2016-2017). Since 2020, he has been appointed as the IEEE AESS Distinguished Lecturer. He was also the recipient of Excellent Paper Award in RADAR 2006 conference.
