特朗普夫妇确诊新冠

中午正在备课，浏览器插件突然弹出一个新闻：

我乍一看以为是fake news，后来发现是真的。

假期泡汤了。撸起袖子，准备开工！

今天准备了两段话，一段是Seattle Times (西雅图时报) 的报道，另一段是朋友圈里一位美国外教刚发的动态。

先看《西雅图时报》的报道：

(A) President Donald Trump said Friday / (B) that he and first lady Melania Trump / (C) have tested positive for the coronavirus, / (D) just a month before the presidential election / (E) and after having spent much of the last year largely downplaying the threat of the virus.

特朗普总统周五称，他和第一夫人梅拉尼娅·特朗普新冠检测呈阳性。现在离总统大选只有一月之遥，而且在此之前，他花了过去近一年的时间在极力淡化新冠病毒的威胁。

这句话可以分成ABCDE五部分，A部分点明了消息源和时间：President Donald Trump said Friday，特朗普总统周五称。

注意，在新闻体裁中，“星期几”前的介词on通常省略，以节约版面，突出重点。

BC两部分交代了主要事件，其中B点明了人物：he and first lady Melania Trump，他和第一夫人梅拉尼娅·特朗普；C部分说明了事件：have tested positive for the coronavirus。

注意两点：

1）表示“检测呈阳/阴性”，虽然是被动的动作——被检测，但不用被动，直接说 sb test+positive/negative.

2）“XX检测呈阳/阴性”，用介词for: test positive/negative for...(某种病毒/疾病)。

DE两部分加了两个时间状语结构，其中D介绍了之后的情况：just a month before the presidential election，就在总统大选前一个月的时间（特朗普检测呈阳性）

形势紧迫！

E介绍了之前的情况：after having spent much of the last year largely downplaying the threat of the virus

这里面有一个结构：spend+时间+doing sth

这里的“时间”是much of the last year，去年大部分时间；

doing sth是largely downplaying the threat of the virus，

downplay意思是“淡化(重要性/严肃性)”（down表示向下的方向），也可以写成play down，这在外刊种还比较常见，比如今年上半年的 AP News 就讲过特朗普如何淡化新冠病毒的风险：

After weeks of trying to play down the risk posed by the coronavirus pandemic, President Trump struck a new, more urgent tone Monday.此前几周，特朗普总统一直设法淡化新冠病毒大流行带来的风险。本周一，他传递出一个新的、更紧迫的论调...

play down the risk: 淡化风险

pose the risk to sb/sth: 给...带来风险

strike a...tone: 传递了...样的论调

这里的Monday前也省略了介词on.

回到文中来，having spent much of the last year largely downplaying the threat of the virus 的意思是：他花了去年大部分时间(spent much of the last year)在极力淡化新冠病毒的威胁(downplaying the threat of the virus)。

滑稽、荒唐、可笑。

接下来进入第二部分：一位美国外教在朋友圈发的动态：

原话是这么说的：

If it's true, and it seems to be, but it's too late there to get a really satisfying confirmation, it's a complete game changer in ways most people probably don't get yet. However, it's also poetic justice. Maybe some sort of instant karma is real.

这段话主要表达了四点内容：

1）特朗普确诊让人欢欣鼓舞，虽然来得很晚；

2）这会改变人们对待疫情的态度；

3）特朗普罪有应得；

4）因果报应是存在的。

game-changer是一个很好用的小词，顾名思义，它表示 the thing that changes a game 游戏改变者。但这里的“游戏”不是真的游戏，而是比喻“形势、局势”，所以 be a game changer in...指“在某方面是个形势改变者”，即“改变某个方面”。布鲁金斯学会的一份关于“区块链”的报道中，就用到了这个词：

For this reason, the Blockchain is a potential game changer.从这个角度说，区块链可能会改变形势。

写作中我们就可以用 be a game changer in...替换 change...，比如在开头我们经常会写：科技发展改变了……，我们一般会说：The development of technology has changed...，现在可以说：The development of technology proved to be a game-changer in...。

poetic justice指“充满诗意的正义”，也就是说，川普确诊是正义的伸张，而且是充满诗意的、美妙的，poetic和前面的satisfying都有一种“大快人心”的感觉。

补充一个表达：Justice was done!正义得到了伸张！正义没有缺席！

《权力的游戏》第一章就出现了这个用法，Bran被Lord Stark带去看守夜人被行刑：

This was the first time he had been deemed old enough to go with his lord father and his brothers to see the king’s justice done.

这次他年纪总算够大，可以与父兄同往刑场，目睹国王律法的执行。

karma是佛教术语，译为“因果报应、因果循环”，Maybe some sort of instant karma is real的意思就是：或许某种因果报应是存在的。

再刷朋友圈的时候，外教又在底部加了个评论：

You reap what you sow是一个idiom，意思是：自食其果、罪有应得。和前面的 some sort of instant karma is real 表达的是一个意思。

特朗普失了民心！

《孙子兵法》中说过：

故经之以五事，校之以计，而索其情。一曰道，二曰天，三曰地，四曰将，五曰法。 

打仗之前要比较双方五个方面：道、天、地、将、法。其中“道”指的就是政府的公信力、领导力，你的人民听不听你的，能不能团结在你身边——这是决胜的关键。

从这面看，美国已经输了，只不过要时间来证明。
