Abstract: After a brief outline of Deleuze’s work, this article surveys his relation to Marx and Marxism in his solo writings and in his texts co-authored with Guattari. It then discusses the varied encounters with literature and literary works in the course of his career, along with the different ways in which these can be periodized. The final section focuses on Deleuze’s enduring philosophical vitalism and the manner in which this comes to the fore in his later discussions of Anglo-American literature, concluding with an example from Virginia Woolf’s The Waves.

Abstract: Marxism has frequently been considered a discourse of high timeliness. After the “spatial turn” in the humanities and social sciences, however, more attention has been paid to the issues of space, place, and mapping in Marxist critical theory and practice in which, as we see in research findings, both space and time are playing an essential role. This article argues that spatiotemporality is embedded in many concepts of the Marxian discourse, whereas Marxism is the most suitable critical discourse for conducting spatial literary studies. By drawing from the work of Fredric Jameson and other theorists, examining some narrative texts, and relying on mapping as the key concept, this article aims to explore how spatial literary studies can more effectively disclose the connections between literature and social space with the help of Marxist criticism, look at the spatial dialectics underpinning narrative form and content, and analyze the historical production of literary and social spaces, while assessing the multiple frames of reference by which we understand our situations in space and time. Finally, the article shows that a Marxist-oriented spatial literary studies will facilitate a better understanding of the dynamic world system of which we are a part and open up imaginative spaces for future development.

Title: Poeticality, Poetic Language and Irony in The Communist Manifesto
内容摘要:作为“宣言体”的开创者,《共产党宣言》的诗意、诗性语言历来为人称道。《宣言》在诗性语言中体现出的澎湃激情和浪漫主义气质,既与时代精神密切相关,也与早期马克思的诗作有直接联系。《宣言》一方面重视普通民众在诗与诗意上的普遍意识和接受心理,另一方面以呼告中的移位、反讽式隐喻打破人们的“单一视镜”,冲击其头脑中固有、僵化的观念。《宣言》文体的嬗变,诗性语言的运用,都是服务于解释真理、启蒙大众、驳斥反动派荒谬言论的终极目的。《宣言》既顺应也修正了人们对诗性语言的认知:它是直抵事物真相的语言,是感性与理性、热情洋溢与务求实际、创造性与批判性辩证统一的言语方式。
Abstract: As a precedent of the “manifesto genre,” the poeticality and poetic language of The Communist Manifesto have been applauded constantly. The outpouring passion and romantic temperament in its poetic language are closely related to the spirit of the time and the early poetic works of Karl Marx as well. On the one hand, the Manifesto accentuates the public’s understanding and perception of poetry; on the other hand, with the shift in summoning and the use of ironic metaphor, it breaks the public’s “sole lens” and abolishes the existing and rigid concepts in the public mind. Its change in style and its use of poetic language are ultimately intended to explain truths, enlighten the masses, and denounce the fallacies of reactionaries. The Manifesto follows and rectifies the public’s perception of poetic language: it is both a language that manifests truths and a rhetoric that articulates a dialectical unity between the sensible and reasonable, the passionate and practical, and the innovative and critical.

Title: The Transference of Class Perspective and the Development of Cultural Studies
内容摘要:“阶级”是马克思主义的核心概念之一,也是文化研究的母题之一。文化研究的发展深受阶级视角变迁的影响,以利维斯为代表的文化守成主义者,站在少数精英阶层的立场维护文化传统和秩序;以威廉斯为代表的文化马克思主义者,站在以工人阶级为主体的大众立场肯定工人阶级及大众文化的价值;以费斯克为代表的“不加批判的文化民粹主义”,以抽象的“大众”消解阶级,以文化意义的再生产抵抗文化霸权。对“阶级”和政治经济学的放弃一度使文化研究陷入困境和范式危机。文化研究的未来在于与政治经济学结合,回归马克思主义阶级理论和阶级分析,面向数字时代,关注数字劳工(劳动),展开数字资本主义批判。由此可见,学术立场和价值判断对文化研究具有重要意义,阶级分析对于文化研究仍然具有有效性。
Abstract: “Class” is both one of the core concepts of Marxism and one of the major topics in Cultural Studies. The development of Cultural Studies has been deeply influenced by the transference of class perspective. The Cultural Conservatives, represented by Leavis, maintain the cultural tradition and order from the standpoint of the minority elites; the Cultural Marxists, represented by Williams, side with the public, which counts the working class as its main body, in affirming the importance of the working class and the value of mass culture. “The non-critical Cultural Populism,” represented by Fiske, decomposes class through the abstract notion of “masses” and resists cultural hegemony through the reproduction of cultural meanings. For a time, the abandonment of class stance and political economy led Cultural Studies into a dilemma and a paradigm crisis. The future of Cultural Studies lies in our readiness to integrate itself with political economy, return to Marxist theory of class and class analysis, embrace the digital age, pay close attention to digital labor, and carry out the critique of digital capitalism. To this end, academic standpoint and value judgment are imperative to Cultural Studies, and class analysis is still an effective approach.

Abstract: William Empson, a well-known English critic and poet, came to China during the Anti-Japanese War, teaching at Linshi University in Changsha and the Southwestern Associated University in Kunming, and mentoring a huge number of students who later became renowned English scholars in China. The poems he composed in this period reflect not only his own thoughts and experiences, but also the society and history of that era of war and conflict. A contextual reading of these “China works” may trace their historical background and demonstrate that the Sino-Japanese War is both a backdrop and an important theme for these poems. Empson’s war narrative, including his thoughts on the relation between literature and politics and between Chinese and Japanese cultures, represents another dimension of his cultural and aesthetic perceptions.

Title: Donald Keene’s Idea about Mutual Learning among Civilizations
内容摘要:唐纳德·金一生浸润在美国/西方文明、日本文明之中,并对中国文明保有极大兴趣。他经常将西方文明、日本文明及中国文明相互参照比鉴,从而形成了较为独特的“多元文明互鉴”模式。美国(西方)文明既是他的思想底色,也是价值评判的根基;日本文明是他终生体验与探察的对象,这使得他较为客观地进行评说与阐释;中国文明则是他研究日本的“支点”。随着战后区域研究的兴起以及其个人的独特体验,唐纳德·金的文明互鉴思想在其日本文学研究实践中得以呈现。一方面,注重日本文学对中国古代文学的吸收与借鉴,另一方面突出西方文学对日本近代文学的影响。唐纳德·金的“多元文明互鉴”思想有助于他更为客观地对待日本文学与文明,也避免了其陷入萨义德所说“东方主义”的窠臼。
Abstract: Donald Keene immersed himself in American/Western and Japanese civilizations all his life, but he also retained a keen interest in Chinese civilization. He often made comparisons and references between the three civilizations, thus forming a unique model of “mutual learning among multiple civilizations.” American (Western) civilization is not only his ideological background, but also the foundation of value judgment. Japanese civilization is the object of his lifelong experience and exploration, which enables him to make objective comments and interpretations. Chinese civilization is the “fulcrum” of his research on Japan. With the rise of post-war area studies and his own unique experience, Keene’s idea about mutual learning among civilizations surfaced in his studies of Japanese literature. He seems to have attached great attention to Japanese literature’s absorption and reference from ancient Chinese literature on the one hand and, on the other, highlighted the influence of Western literature on modern Japanese literature. His idea about “mutual learning among civilizations” helps him deal with Japanese literature and civilization more objectively, and avoid falling into the trap of “Orientalism” as described by Said.

Title: The Intertextual Writing of La Divina Commedia in The Cantos
内容摘要:《诗章》与《神曲》的关系问题一直是学界争论的焦点。当“现代性”与“经典重读”介入诗歌文本阐释,二者错综复杂的联系就被重新审视。《诗章》受到《神曲》的影响,这已得到学界的充分肯定。但是,具体影响表现在什么地方?国内外学者虽有涉及,可是比较深入细致的研究成果并不多见。文章从文本互文的角度对《诗章》与《神曲》的关系问题进行探讨,认为《诗章》在艺术呈现的方式方面存在对《神曲》的互文式书写,反映在宗教隐喻之维、自由美学之维、生命哲学之维等方面。它们在无形之中彰显了庞德“新/日日新”的创作思想及理念。
Abstract: The correlation between The Cantos and La Divina Commedia has always been the focus of debate in academic circles. When “modernity” and “rereading of classics” intervene in the interpretation of poetic texts, the intricate connection between the two is instantly subject to re-examination. The influence of La Divina Commedia upon The Cantos has been fully recognized by the academic community, but in which specific aspects? Although Poundian scholars in China and other countries have touched upon this issue, in-depth and detailed research findings are still rare to see. By exploring the connection between The Cantos and La Divina Commedia from the intertextual perspective, this article claims that The Cantos relies on the intertextual writing of La Divina Commedia in its artistic presentation, particularly in the aspects of religious metaphor, freedom-oriented aesthetics, and life philosophy, all of which manifest, imperceptibly, Pound’s perception and concept of creative writing, namely, “MAKE IT NEW/Day by day make it new.”

内容摘要:曼布克国际奖得主朱赫·哈尔西的作品《天体》围绕乡村三代人的人生悲欢,反映了阿曼社会由传统向现代转型进程中的变迁与冲突。在小说中,坐落于首都与周边沙漠之间的小村庄阿瓦斐作为一个主观构建的“时空组态”,凝缩了阿曼近代以降历史浮沉的全景画面,并见证了阿曼社会在物质、精神、文化、心理等层面的种种流变。“法拉吉”水渠既是一处农业栖居景观,也象征着一种顽强的地方精神,它以主要女性人物为承载,成为阿曼民族生生不息的源泉。哈尔西将宇宙中心主义意识与充满阿曼地方性特征的乡土元素相融合,在阿曼的地理、历史和文化环境之间建立紧密联系,构建了一帧帧自然属性与人文属性合一的文学景观。
Abstract: Celestial Bodies, written by the Man Booker International Prize winner Jokha Alharthi, is centered around the lives of three generations in a rural area, reflecting the changes and conflicts in Omani society’s transformation from tradition to modernity. In the novel, Al-Awafi, a small village located between the capital city and the surrounding desert, serves as a “subjectively constructed chronotope,” which condenses a panoramic picture of Omani modern history and witnesses the changes of Omani society in the material, spiritual, cultural, and psychological aspects. The “Faraj” canal that runs through the village is both a scenery in rural residence and a symbol of the tenacious local spirit embodied by the main female characters as a source of eternal vitality for the nation of Oman. By blending her cosmocentric consciousness with the localized rural elements of Oman, Alharthi attempts to establish a strong link between Oman’s geographical, historical, and cultural environment and create a series of literary landscapes through a fusion of natural and human attributes.

Abstract: Pamuk’s latest novel, Nights of Plague, presents three types of maps: a geographic map of Arkaz, the capital city of Mingheria province; a map of plague-related epidemiology; a territorial map of the Ottoman Empire and the Mingheria Island. Viewing from different perspectives and dimensions, we can find that the three maps have multiple functions. The geographical city map, produced through drawing and map narrative, constructs a story world with a fusion of fiction and reality. As visual and symbolic signs, the maps of epidemiology, empire’s territory, and national geography are intended to tell stories and represent specific histories. The use of maps showcases Pamuk’s “visual narrative,” his unique concept of literary writing. Given Pamuk’s self-identification as “a visual writer,” this article argues that Pamuk’s works could be better interpreted from the perspective of viewing.

Abstract: In Ville Cruelle, a classic of Francophone African literature, Mongo Beti describes the urban life during the colonial rule from the African perspective by analyzing the living crisis and identity dilemma caused by apartheid and mercenary marriage and corroborating the dual oppression of African youth by colonial rule and traditional forces. He launches his attack on colonialism out of his historical obligation for the anti-colonial struggle and delivers his criticism of cultural traditions in support of the cultural mission of social transformation. He doesn’t endorse the concept of Black exceptionalism represented by “Black Identity,” seeing the latter as a trap of racism. By delving into the urban life of black people, he tries to dispel the “urban myth” of colonialism and the “traditional myth” of tribalism. Subsequently, he substantiates his construction of black subjectivity by bashing “white supremacy” on the one hand and, on the other, calling “Black Identity” into question. Judging from the time of its publication, Beti's exploration of the African urbanization and black subjectivity is an act of foreseeing. With the “dual criticism,” his anti-colonial writing seems to have broken the one-sided claim of the colonial discourse, thus evincing a historical testimony to the drastic changes in African society, and highlighting the unyielding pursuit of national ideological liberation.

Title: The Phantom of Elders Politics: Divinatory Writing in Hebrew Prophetic Literature

Abstract: Prophetic literature is a key component of Hebrew classic, Tanakh, which was mainly compiled by the Deuteronomists. Even though divination is regarded as a taboo by Mosaic Law, its origin could be traced back to the pre-monarchic period of Israelite history, and it was widely utilized by the prophets during the “prophetic movement.” The Deuteronomists take divination as their writing object and link it directly to oracle, so as to grant the priority of gaining oracle to the prophets rather than the priests. Meanwhile, they use this priority as a weapon to restrain the monarchical power. The key reason is that the elder class, which had represented the traditional forces among people since the establishment of the monarchy, has been marginalized incessantly. It hopes that by supporting the Deuteronomists to launch their public opinion offensive via literary activities, it would be able to break through its own political and cultural dilemma in the wake of “prophetic movement.”

Title: The Anti-System Movement and the Construction of Cultural Community in the 21st-Century American Theory of World Literature
内容摘要:新世纪美国世界文学思潮的兴起与非西方国家的反体系运动具有复杂的关联。随着新自由主义经济文化秩序在全球的逐步扩张,反体系运动由西方国家内部逐步走向国际,其目标在于重构当前世界体系中排除与包纳的界限。美国学者在其世界文学理论构建中一方面通过设定世界概念和历史的同一性,重构文学意义的生成机制,为非西方国家主动将自身包纳入世界文化共同体提供动力;另一方面采用拟态的方式,借用既有西方思维框架重塑古代 - 现代世界文学形态的生成史,在概念、历史和现实层面将非西方国家的文学文化纳入世界体系中,为世界文化共同体的形成提供理论基础,从而从思想和文化层面应对反体系运动带来的资本主义世界系统性危机。这表明当代西方文学批评界已经跨出学术象牙塔,与当前世界历史、政治和文化的大趋势互相推波助澜,通过催生新的文化和政治思想,成为国际社会与世界体系塑造的重要参与者。
Abstract: There is a complicated correlation between the emergence of American ideas of world literature in the new millennium and the Anti-System Movement in non-Western countries. With the gradual expansion of the neo-liberal economic and cultural order around the globe, the Anti-System Movement steadily spilled from Western countries to the world with the aim to reconstruct the boundaries between the excluded and the included within the current world system. While building up their theory of world literature, American scholars not only offered incentives to non-Western countries for voluntarily succumbing their literature and culture to the world system by establishing a homogeneous conception of the world and human history and reconstructing the generative mechanism of literary significance, but also adopted a mimetic approach to reinvent the formative history of the world literature in pre-modern and modern times based on the existing framework of Western mindset, so that they could incorporate the literature and culture of non-Western countries into the world system, encompassing concept, history, and reality. Their purpose is to lay down a theoretic foundation for the formation of a world cultural community and respond, both in ideology and culture, to the systematic crisis of the capitalist world in the wake of the Anti-System Movement. All this shows that the Western literary critics today have stepped out of their academic ivory tower and acted in concert with the general trend in world history, politics, and culture, thus becoming important participants in building the international community and the world system by means of cultivating new socio-political ideas.

Abstract: Sound is a key word in the writing of Gertrude Stein, an American modernist writer. In the first half of the 20th century, she wrote more than 100 portrait poems, in which the characteristics and implications of sound itself are fully exemplified. Based on the source of meaning, the sound in poetry can be generally divided into two categories, namely, “sound of words” and “sound between words.” Starting from Stein’s auditory consciousness, this article analyzes the sound patterns of “nearly sound,” “sound transcription,” “polyphonic rhyme,” and “rhythm” in her portrait poems, so as to explore the “activity,” “fluidity,” and “creativity” of language poetics and illuminate readers’ “intellectual participation” in “intellectual recreation” and the ontological nature of language. Between the aesthetic subject and its object, Stein’s language poetics creates a distance.On the one hand, it highlights the divergence of the established correspondence between the signifier and the signified and, thereby, widens the gap between artistic representation and the world of reality; on the other hand, it reinforces the connection between language and the real world through auditory experience. The sound in Stein’s poetry and the “intellectual recreation” of the language embody her distinctive modernist concept of aesthetics.

Abstract: William Clark Russell is an excellent British writer of sea novels in the late 19th century. The detailed and vivid description of landscape is a significant characteristic of his novel writing. Russell often offers picturesque representations of the coast, sky, sunset, and other inland landscape in his novels and foregrounds them in a way that relates to the British national identity. Title: Searching for the Meaning of “Criticism”: A Review of A Study of the 20th-Century African American Literary Criticism
内容摘要:王玉括教授的《20世纪非裔美国文学批评研究》是近年来我国非裔美国文学研究领域的高质量专著类成果。该著从纷繁复杂的非裔美国文学批评观念和现象中梳理出“艺术还是宣传”之争这条主线,从横向和纵向两个维度对研究对象进行深度挖掘,既考察非裔美国文学与白人文学之间的交集,又关注非裔美国文学批评在新世纪的走向,表现出宏阔的学术视野。该著具有鲜明的本土视角,积极思考非裔美国文学批评对我国文学和学术研究的启示,同时坚持问题导向,力求见前人所未见,言前人所未言。该著的问世标志着我国非裔美国文学批评研究的不断成熟,也对未来的研究起到引领和示范作用。
Abstract: A Study of the 20th-Century African American Literary Criticism, written by Wang Yukuo, is a high-quality book in the field of Chinese studies of African American literature in recent years. By sorting out the controversy over “Art or Propaganda” as a guiding thread from various critical notions and practices in African American literature, this book probes deeply into its research objects from both horizontal and vertical perspectives. Also, it shows its broad scholarly vision in exploring not only the connections and interactions between the black and white literature, but also the development of African American literary criticism in the 21st century. While deliberating, from a conspicuous Chinese standpoint, on what Chinese literature and Chinese literatry studies may draw from African American literary criticism, the author maintains a question-oriented approach to uncover what no one has noticed so far and say what no one has said before. The publication of the book marks a new phase of the Chinese scholarships on African American literary criticism and plays a leading and exemplary role for future studies.
