Prof. Yuan-Zhu Zhang et al. developed a simple yet efficient post-modification approach via the Schiffbase condensation. Equipped with the chemical-active aldehyde (‒CHO) groups, the parent cyanide-bridged square [Fe2Co2] molecules were thus feasibly decorated with the alkyldiamines (NH2-(CH2)n-NH2), and encapsulated into discrete molecular capsules. Variable temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction, solid-state infrared/UV-Vis-NIR spectra and magnetic studies revealed the complete and abrupt thermo- and photo-induced ETCST property, and the bidirectional switching between the diamagnetic [FeIILS2CoIIILS2] state and the paramagnetic [FeIIILS2CoIIHS2] state (LS, low spin; HS, high spin) (see the article on pages 1340‒1348).
