Just as new aircraft designs aren't rushed into production but are instead meticulously tested in wind tunnel simulations, could the digital wind tunnels for psycholinguistic research be the language models of the future? The advent of large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI's GPT series has engendered a transformative shift in computational linguistics and has led to the next technological revolution. Along with some open-source LLMs, these models, equipped with the ability to generate coherent and contextually relevant text, have become valuable proxies for understanding human language processing. Psycholinguistic experiments, traditionally conducted with human subjects, are increasingly leveraging the prowess of LLMs to simulate and study language behaviours: 1) The predictive patterns of LLMs, while not identical to human cognition in all aspects so far, still offer a fertile ground for hypotheses generation and norming experimental stimuli, providing a cost-effective and scalable alternative to early-stage language research for human subjects. 2) The use of LLMs in psycholinguistics also facilitates the replication of classic experiments, allowing researchers to observe whether LLMs exhibit behaviours like human-like linguistic phenomena.
The `MacBehaviour` R package serves as a methodological toolkit available for psycholinguistic research for LLMs. It facilitates researchers to design/replicate experiments and collect LLM’s verbal responses.
About the Speaker
Xufeng Duan is a PhD student with Dr. Zhenguang Cai at the language processing lab, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Xufeng has had extensive experience in collecting LLMs’ responses for several studies. His research focuses on large language models (LLM) and orthographic processing in Chinese handwriting. He used computational methods and behaviour/EEG/fMRI evidence to study the mechanism of language systems. He was also trained and licensed to use TMS for research in Hong Kong and had an internship as a language therapist/researcher for aphasia at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, China.

Abstract: Linguistics is the study of human language and an important means of understanding people’s cognition and cultures. Therefore, linguistic knowledge and methods have important applications in people studies, such as language acquisition, language development, and speech-language pathology. This guest lecture will introduce several research studies and frameworks in these applied areas. The research studies involve school-aged children’s phonological awareness development, school-aged bilingual children’s tone development, and teachers’ perspectives on teaching a minority language in bilingual classrooms. The theoretical frameworks include a conceptual framework on second-language pronunciation and communication and the WHO-ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health) model for speech-language disorders. The lecture will discuss how such research and frameworks provide insights into our understanding of language structures and have implications for educational or clinical practices. Through these discussions, the lecture will highlight the idea of considering “language” in relation to its speakers who have unique individual experiences and considering the speakers in their dynamic and complex contexts.
Speaker information: Dr. Youran Lin is a postdoctoral fellow at the Bilingual Acquisition Lab of Alberta, University of Alberta. Youran obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Linguistics at Peking University and combined master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and doctoral degree in Rehabilitation Sciences degree at the University of Alberta. Her research interests include speech and language development in bilingual children and second language learners, speech and language development in children with special needs, and Chinese speech and languages in multilingual and multicultural contexts.
