亭亭山上松，

瑟瑟谷中风。

风声一何盛，

松枝一何劲。

冰霜正惨凄，

终岁常端正。

岂不罹凝寒？

松柏有本性。

Liu Zhen

Upright and tall those mountain pines,

rustling in the wind from up the valley.

How loud the voice of the wind,

and how sturdy those pine branches!

Though desolate indeed the ice and frost,

throughout the year they never yield.

No, it’s not that they never encounter hardship and cold,

but such is the nature of pines.

刘桢，字公幹，出身于世宦之家，很早便有文名，在曹操手下先后任司空军谋祭酒、五官中郎将文学、平原侯庶子等职。曹丕（五官中郎将）曾与其诸文学酣聚，并令夫人甄氏出拜。坐中众人皆倾伏，只有刘桢“平视”甄氏，因此下狱受刑。卒于建安二十二年（217年）。

Liu Zhen (?—217), courtesy name Gonggan, came from an official family. He was known early for his writings, and was appointed by Cao Cao as the Army Libationer, Instructor for the Central Commander of Five Guards, and Mentor of Lord Pingyuan (Cao Zhi). Once, Cao Pi, the Central Commander of Five Guards, asked his wife, Lady Zhen, to meet his Instructors at a drinking party; all others present held their heads low as a show of respect, and Liu Zhen alone looked at her straight in her eyes. For this act of irreverence he was jailed and punished. He died in the twenty-second year of the Jian'an era (217).

建安七子，是汉末建安年间曹氏父子之外的七位知名文士，即孔融、陈琳、王粲、徐幹、阮瑀、应玚、刘桢。他们的诗作雄健深沉，慷慨悲凉，史称“建安风力”。本书是首部汉英对照的建安七子诗歌精选集，收录了七子的主要诗作，由美籍华裔学者吴伏生和英国诗人Graham Hartill合作翻译。吴教授国学修养极深，英语地道，Graham Hartill擅长诗歌创作，二人曾合作翻译阮籍咏怀诗，并入选“大中华文库”。两位译者以无韵自由诗的形式翻译中国古诗，译文准确流畅，是古诗英译实践的有益尝试。
