Tired of the busy, painted pomp of the court,
Come I to live here as a retired lord.
Life is flat, weary, a span of tedious time
But where to go for a merry pastime!
Those pathetic poems I write during the day
Show that love is unique and hard to say.
Here sit I in this White Camellia Hall, alone,
Watching starry light replaced by morning tone.
The red candles at the door give me delight,

And my verse is lit fair by the morning light.
Love is as thoughts and dreams and tears and sighs,
But in the tide of time, it never fades and dies,
When you shall come to Peony Pavilion brave
To enjoy true love beyond the edge of grave. 

My honoured parents, indeed I have been spoiled,
Having grown headstrong and foolishly idle.
I draw pictures while idly playing on a swing,
And dreamily sew patterns of lovebirds in silk. 

I have of late lost all my mirth and peace,

Often sitting idle, alone, fully dressed,

With smoky incense, engulfed in melancholy.

Ah! To live, to die, and to die, to live.
This is the howl of a poor, lonely soul!
Yet no lover is heard to answer to
This pitiful pain of despised love!
Well, why not call the name of your love?
A lonely wandering ghost now as I am,
Whom can I ever expect to call my name?
Sounds of unclear syllables ceaselessly flow
And from time to time it breaks off and halts,
Yet it picks up again and wails anew. 

How now, my love? Why is your cheek so red?
How chance the sweet wine does work so fast
That you smile with such sweet dimples there?

Or, some love-potion has been dropped on your eyelids

So your fanciful eyes a wrong lover have sighted?
Or, running away in haste with your lover
Have you followed the wrong path and got lost?

Aye! Beyond the setting sun is the west
Where green grass grows fair and blest.
In a secluded abode I alone stay there,
Only of my loving parents to take care.
Sixteen years I have passed in this world,
Surely a pure bud among leaves untroubled.
Then I felt sad that the spring could not last,
Then yearning for its return gripped me fast.
Then you blazed so bright into my eyesight,
Elegant, mannerly, handsome, a brave knight!
Well, in praising you thus, I take much delight,
Staying with you, sitting by the candlelight,
Mocking the whistling wind that ranges outside
And, by the window, chatting far into the night.
