If the dissemination of misleading or false information has led to negative social repercussion, who will be held accountable?
Social Media has been a place for people to share knowledge, express opinions and show concern. Despite the fact that it carries with it sometimes objective comments and unbiased news, it also helps half-truths or even rumor, biased opinions and strong emotions to pass on quickly, leading to consequences that one could hardly think of.
Social Media plays an important role in circulating half-truths and rumors, which spread fast but are hard to eradicate. In many cases, with a picture or two, a subscription account can make up an entire story about someone, which is a widespread phenomenon on Weibo. While some of these subscriptions accounts are simply trying to create sensations by making up false information, the rumors might have unimaginable repercussion for society. People's Daily has to publish reports on Ten Rumors In Wechat Moments every month, producing lukewarm response if any. These rumors, once clarified, would soon appear in another form, on another platform repeating itself over and over again.
Social Media also helps biased opinions to circulate. When a woman was beaten in Yunnan Province, some people started to make negatives comments about tourism in the province, leading to a verbal war between different people taking different sides, while settling the problem became secondary. Whenever a debate arises in social media, a knee jerk reaction for many people is to take sides, embracing the opinion of those they are in favor of and rejecting that of those they are opposed to. Therefore, biased opinions travel at light speed within the group of “birds of a feather”, while serious arguments and sensible reasoning is lost in the sound and fury.
Moreover, social media is used not only to convey messages, but also to provoke irrational emotions. There are numerous ridiculous cyber-attacks on the internet these days, the worst victims of which are celebrities. Some of them are bombarded with hateful comments simply for not having expressed condolences in time to the affected people after an earthquake. Others suffer from massive online verbal abuses for making a sum of donation that is incommensurate with the fortune that they possess. Therefore, many celebrities simply choose to close their account or disable the comment section of their homepage. Acts of cyber violence such as these are sad examples of how social media can be misused and abused.
In conclusion, we should be more cautious when we read or retweet a piece of news or a video. It might be hard not to be influenced by it, but we should at least reflect on our own constantly, stay away from the harm it might bring us, and cultivate a critical-thinking mind. Next time, when bombarded with information on social media, stay sensible.
