叙述
纺织工业在大众文化中的样貌是什么?本单元的重点关注电影以及印刷媒介中的纺织工业,并探讨主流的纺织工业形象如何反映、折射甚至重塑现实本身。
本单元以一系列拼贴与并置的手法,对曾作为电影拍摄地的几座上海纺织厂今昔样貌展开调查。以此製作的这些图像,統合了工业生产和电影生产条件,也令人想起工人离开卢米埃工厂的场景。在反思电影工业起源的同时,另有一部散文电影进一步基于一个世纪内的中国电影史,考察以纺织厂为背景的电影,以及其劳动力形象的转变。

Narration
How is the textile industry represented in mass culture? Focusing on cinema and print media, this section examines how popular representations of the industry might reflect, refract or even remake reality itself.
Through a series of collages that investigates the former and present states of the Shanghai textile mills where several films were once set, the conditions of industrial and cinematic production converge in images that recall the Lumieres’ originary scene of workers leaving the factory. This reflection on the industrial origin of cinema is further elaborated through an essay film that examines the shifting representations of labor in films set in textile mills across over a century of Chinese cinema history.

在十九世纪末叶,现今的南通境内主要的人口仍是小农社群居多,与邻近上海的国际都会有着鲜明的对比。南通在1920年代逐渐转型为全球纺纱业中心的过程中,这些社群人口是如何生存的?同样的这种农村社群组织方式,是如何持续影响着进入上海,成为工人的无产阶级?本单元试图通过考察连接长江三角洲地区工业中心与其农业边缘地区的劳动力、技术和资本网络来回答这些问题。
本单元围绕着一张长三角地带的图表展开,我们在图表上以不同物件、历史人物以及各种地点的标识来呈现各种物质网络中的关键节点,并透过讲解引导,以及制图展演,从而视觉化这个网络。而随着书籍、文件和图片的档案展示,本单元也将进一步带出本地纺织工业发展的历史叙述。

Network
At the turn of the twentieth century, the area that falls within the boundaries of present-day Nantong, unlike its more cosmopolitan neighbor Shanghai, was populated primarily by small peasant communities. How did these communities manage to subsist amidst the region’s transformation into a global industrial spinning center by the 1920s? By the same token, how did communal forms of association that organized village life persist through the proletarianization of Shanghai’s migrant peasant workers? This section seeks to answer these questions by examining the networks of labor, technology, and capital that connected the industrial centers of the Yangtze Delta River region to its agrarian peripheries.
At the core of this section is an illustrated map of the river delta region upon which a selection of objects, people and sites have been identified as key nodes within different material networks that will be given visual form through a docent-led mapping exercise. This is accompanied by an archival display of books, documents and illustrations that provides a historical narrative of the textile industry’s development in the region.

噪音
噪音可以成为感性知识的对象吗?本单元以纺织厂极其嘈杂的环境为出发点,将劳动作为一种具身经验进行考察,探讨工厂车间中不同形式的感性知识生产。
本单元的核心内容是对过去曾在南通以及上海的纺织厂任职的工人展开的一系列视频采访。这些采访不仅仅是口述史,同时也从人们往往忽略的声音听觉史着手,从而关注非语言的符号以及肌肉记忆。这些具身的知识本身就是一部宝贵的纺织工业史与工人史。
另外,本单元也呈现了纺织工人常用的工具,这些工具将放置在茶话会的场地上,曾就业于轻纺业的职工,也将在茶话会的对话中对这些材料进行追忆和解说。而上海作为中国纺织工业最早发轫的城市,纺织厂的专业词汇也最早进入上海话的词汇当中,甚至是被吸收到日常使用上。本单元也制作了机组词汇表,节选口述史中搜集到的片段。

Noise
Can noise be an object of sensuous knowledge? Taking the extremely noisy environment of the spinning and weaving mill as its point of departure, this section examines labor as an embodied experience and explores the different forms of sensuous knowledge production that takes place on the factory floor.
A key anchor within the installation is a series of video interviews with former textile workers in Nantong and Shanghai that extend beyond oral histories to consider the much less documented aural histories, nonverbal signs and muscular memories that in themselves constitute an invaluable repository of embodied knowledge for writing a workers’ history of the textile industry. Also included in the installation are tools and other instruments frequently used by textile workers that will be activated during a tea session with retired workers from Shanghai. In a lexical chart that has been newly produced for this installation, oral history enters the written record through a compilation of expressions in Nantong and Shanghai dialect originating from the textile mill that have now been assimilated into everyday usage.

工人电影茶话会 Tea Session: Worker Cinema Society
在这次茶话会上,曾经任职于国棉二十五厂的周文静老师为我们讲解细纱车间的飞花与回丝。参与者一同与上海纺织职工共同观赏以中国纺织厂为背景的电影片段。同时,这些过去的职工分享了他们来自现实生活经历的观察和见解。
制图导游:物与网络 Mapping Exercise: Object and Network
本单元由讲解员曾钰婷和孙纪元围绕着他们的制图,展开纸上导游。这次的导游以不同物件为起点,试图勾连起长三角地区的人事时地物,以此直观地表现本地的近现代纺织历史,以及其物质网络。

本次讲座从劳动网络、技术网络、资本网络的几条线索,对长三角流域的纺织历史如何流入南方的珠三角地带,并进而交织在一起的历史过程展开考察。何锐安和陈玺安根据对上海、南通、香港和广州的研究,构建了一条时间线,探讨中国现代纺织史的位移和回归,同时也映照着纺织业背后的历史时代面貌。
