A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE

The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.

The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.

Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

As the twins lookedaround them in disappointment, their father appeared. Seeing the messy kitchenand the panicked children, he quickly understood what happened. “We just wantto give mom a surprise,” said Jeff with teary eyes and his swollen fingers inwater. “And we’ve seen mom doing this for many times,” mumbled Jenna. “Surely youknow what to do,” said father while rolling up his sleeves, “you just need alittle assistance.” With the guidance of father, they quickly cleaned up thestove and fried the bread again. This time, everything went well. Looking atthe perfectly cooked porridge and beautifully fried bread, the three exchangeda silent ‘yeah’.

The twins carried thebreakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. The moment she opened her eyes, the sight of excited children and luring food took her by surprise. “HappyMother’s Day!” the twins put aside the tray and rushed to hug their mother whowas overwhelmed by this sudden gift and could hardly utter a word. “They madeit for you,” leaning against the door, their smiling father winked at his wife,“mostly by themselves.” Love and pride flooding over the mother, she kissed thetwins on their foreheads. This was definitely the best holiday that this lovingmother had shared with her loved ones.

As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared in the doorway. Upon seeing the overcooked bread and messy stove, he instantly understood what the twins were planning to do. “Alright then, let’s fix this together!” said their father who was rolling up his sleeves and ready to help. Jeff was instructed to clean the stove with a wet towel while Jenna volunteered to help father make another French toast. It didn’t take long before everything was settled with their concerted effort. To add a finishing touch, father picked a rose from the garden and placed it on the carefully arranged breakfast tray that the twins had prepared.

The twins woke their mother up by shouting excitedly “Happy Mother's Day,dear Mummy! Surprise for you!” Their mom’s eyes widened with joyfulness and then were twinkling with tears. Dad pretended to be astonished at such wonderful breakfast. Intoxicated in the delicious food and feeling warmth bubbling up inside her heart, the mother hugged her twins tightly. It was such a great holiday when the dearest person can be reminded that how much she is loved, respected and valued.

As the twins lookedaround then in disappointment, their father appeared.  Seeing the kitchen in a total mess, dad wasloud and clear about what had happened in no time. Meanwhile , It was at thisvery moment that the twins realized they might ask for some help. “Let’s getstarted again kids!” dad cracked a smile and comforted in a low voice ,a rippleof excitement and unnamed gratitude running through the twins’ heart. With thestove cleaned and floor swept, everything was soon back to track. Immediately, the kitchen was floated with the fragrant smell of the porridge and fried toastby their joint efforts. Jeff placed the toast carefully into his favorite traywith curved edges, and Jenna added a heart shape of ketchup on it. Perfect! Dadwas just sneaking back to bedroom when the twins together delightedly whisperedto him:”Thank you so much dad”. Now they can’t wait to present the surprise!

The twins carried thebreakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. Jumping out of the bed, theirmother intended to rush to the kitchen as usual, only to find the delicacy .With her eyes wide open, she froze. “We made it for you mom! Happy Mother’sDay! Just sit back and enjoy!” the twins chuckled, holding the tray high infront of their mom. Stunned and moved, mother gently took a bite of the toastas if it were the most delicious food she has ever tasted. Bowing low, shegathered the two little angels into arms tightly, eyes glistening . Overwhelmedby the joy of giving, the twins winked at their father over their mother’sshoulder with great satisfaction, “Preparing breakfast everyday is not an easyjob! We love you mom.” it seemed that they get started to realize the secret tohappiness in family is appreciation and dedication . Mom enjoyed the biggest “banquet”in her life and meanwhile the house was filled with harmoniousness andlaughter!

As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. The kitchen enveloped by a scorching smell, he panted with a haunting rage, “Oh! What happened?” Hanging their heads in guilt, the twins gestured the burnt bread and spilled porridge, whimpering, “Were we more careful, it would be a perfect breakfast for mom.” Hearing that, a surge of warmth welling up in his heart, Dad offered to help the kids prepare the surprise. Feeling over the moon, the twins cleaned up the mess and restarted to cook the dishes with the guidance of Dad. Soon the savory scent of French toast and porridge filled the kitchen. Nothing delighted the kids more than the surprise despite the grease and holes on their aprons. With breakfast placed on the tray, the twins tiptoed upstairs to Mom’s bedroom, winking at their Dad.

The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. “Happy Mother’s Day, Mommy!” the twins exclaimed. “We wanna prepare breakfast for you as you always do for us.” Mom smiled dazzlingly and pressed a gentle kiss on their foreheads, “Thank you my sweeties. I love you.” Beside the door was standing their understanding Dad, who was photographing this touching scene. The entire room was bathed in a harmonious Mother’s Day atmosphere. Before that moment, the kids deemed what Mom did for them was nothing to it; instead, the result surprised them as well. It was only then that they realized Mom gave them not only lives but also unconditional love and care.
