Shanghai Spotlight recently met with their award-winning General Manager Thomas Schmitt-Glaeser to learn more about what sets this magnificent hotel apart from the competition. While the visual appeal of his establishment is clear to see, from the brand new Terraces reminiscent of balmy Bangkok evenings to the airy minimalist perfection of their rooms and suites, creating a brand able to consistently appeal to young urban elites needs management demonstrating a higher EQ and social consciousness than ever before. Sustainability and environmental protection have risen from desirable to essential criteria when potential clients review a potential destination. “We have many clients who make their decisions to stay based on how well our corporate social responsibility is integrated into our offering’’, Thomas informs us. Thai food is well represented with URBAN Café, where Chef Anchalee’s presence ensures both exceptionally high standards and an authenticity it’s competitors will struggle to match. For patrons looking for refreshments with a relaxing ambiance the ZUK Bar is the perfect choice, tastefully decorated and frequently the scene of soirées and evening gatherings of Shanghai scenesters ‘in the know’. A recent collaboration with cocktail master Kazuhisa Arai of Sober Company shows the level of creativity and expertise regularly on display here, with packed out events generating significant social media buzz and interest. The Condé Nast 2022 Readers Choice Awards has recently announced that The Sukhothai Shanghai is #10 in Asia China Hotels, this being the third consecutive year the hotel has been recognized by the organization. It has also received a TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Award for two consecutive years, having garnered rave reviews from numerous visitors during this timeframe.

For the General Manager himself, Thomas is a veteran of high-end luxury hotels with particular knowledge and expertise in the South East Asia region, travel and hotels serve several key functions. Whilst he certainly appreciates the benefits of a rejuvenating staycation in a bustling modern city, the need to explore and test yourself is another aspect of travel that should not be overlooked. While international travel has been reduced since 2020 it has given rise to an incredibly strong domestic tourism industry in China, and not all of it is focused on the familiar territory of the major metropolitan areas. Thomas tells us about an especially challenging yet rewarding adventure he undertook to the border areas between Yunnan and Sichuan, a sixteen hour escape from the pressures of city life to a remote and spectacularly picturesque village of two hundred inhabitants where he was met by spicy cuisine and warm hospitality. Five days of hiking and photography in this adventurers paradise led to a needed recalibration and give insight into an area of untouched beauty that has to be seen to be believed.

Aside from his lifelong passion of travel and exploration, while based in Shanghai Thomas’ main interests are sport and photography. Whether it be cycling around Puxi to gain a different perspective of our fabulous city or fitting in a gym session after work, he believes exercise is essential to balance a high-pressure work environment at the top end of Shanghai’s competitive hospitality scene. Seeking another side to the city we call home is a key motivation for his passion for street photography. Upon first arrival in Shanghai and being based initially in Pudong, Thomas was taken with the ultra futuristic aspects of Lujiazui and it’s skyline of sci-fi reminiscent skyscrapers, a gift that keeps giving for any keen street photographer. However, after later moving to Puxi his focus has altered to the more traditional and historical aspects of life here, the casual beauty of everyday experiences in the shikumen and back streets that could be easily missed without careful attention to detail. The contrast of relentless innovation with proud historical preservation has made Shanghai the perfect stage for Thomas to capture the elements that make Shanghai life so fascinating. The balance between living a luxurious urban lifestyle and remaining in touch with our roots is a challenging balance for many of us to strike; only by prioritizing our passions and wellbeing are we likely to be successful in this pursuit.
