讲座摘要

This lecture examines the vernacularization of birth control sciences and technologies and their critical implications on meanings of reproduction, maternal autonomy, and new womanhood in China during the 1930s and 1940s. Since Margaret Sanger's first visit to China in 1922, birth control had emerged as a vitally significant topic and been debated by various reformers and intellectuals to cater to broader agendas concerning women's liberation, eugenics, and racial hygiene. These discussions, buttressed by the authority of "science," however, mostly occurred at conceptual levels, leaving the scientific practice of birth control untouched. Discussions of reproductive control took a substantial turn in the 1930s and 1940s as health specialists, vernacular social scientists, advertisers, and print media readers became avid authors and consumers of contraceptive technologies and commodities. Despite that this corpus of know-how knowledge often featured women's individual health experiences as users in these technologies and products, I argue that the overwhelming focus on female birth control methods and medicines and their perceived inefficacy ultimately tied women to their biological and social roles as reproductive subjects.

主讲人简介

Dr. Zhang Yun is Assistant Professor in the Department of Chinese History and Culture at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Her research interests mainly lie in the history of health and medicine in modern China, science and technology studies, as well as gender studies. Her current research project focuses on the knowledge production and circulation of women’s reproductive health and technologies in China’s global twentieth century. Dr. Zhang has published articles and translations on Chinese women’s history, women’s print culture, as well as medicine and gender. Her first monograph Engendering the Woman Question: Men, Women, and Writing in China’s Early Periodical Press was published by Brill in 2020.
