A growing number of confirmed, locally-contracted COVID-19 cases have surfaced in Beijing, which have led authorities to issue warnings over the weekend across the city as well as other cities and provinces, including Shandong, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Tianjin, Dalian in Liaoning province, Suzhou in Jiangsu province, Luliang in Shanxi province, Daqing and Harbin in Heilongjiang province.

Beijing on Sunday conducted nucleic acid tests on 76,499 people, with 59 testing positive for COVID-19, according to a press conference held Monday.

As of 6 a.m. Monday, 193 sampling sites had been set up across Beijing to facilitate nucleic acid testings, said Gao Xiaojun, spokesperson for the municipal health commission.

Most of the newly-reported indigenous cases in Beijing were related to the now-closed Xinfadi market.

Local authorities also ordered the removal of Zhang Yuelin from the post of general manager of the Xinfadi wholesale market of fruits, vegetables and meat in Fengtai, which most of the new confirmed cases were related to.

Although domestic travels have been allowed within the country’s borders in recent weeks, passengers are advised not to go to Beijing in the near future unless absolutely necessary, to ensure the situation is as controlled as it can be.

Authorities in Daqing have advised people against consuming or coming into close contact with raw seafood when they buy fresh meat. Plastic bags or gloves can be used to separate it from fruits, vegetables, and other cooked foods to prevent further contamination.

When cooking, chopping boards, kitchen knives and tableware should be separated and cleaned thoroughly, as well as your hands immediately after handling raw ingredients if that’s the case. Animal and fish products should not be consumed raw!

This recent surge proves that the pandemic is not yet over, and that we must all remain careful.
