Academy to Startup|Workshop Encore
June 18th, Hangzhou International Silicon Valley Center: Michael Wang, the founder of Fishburners, was invited by TECOM, to give a FishTalk. In a relaxing atmosphere, we had an in-depth discussion on How to Commercialize Scientific Research Projects in this workshop(Lunch & Learn). A founder on hand commented, "This was the best one so far!"
There are many topics of today’s Fishtalk, including: the common misunderstandings of research project start-ups, start timing, equity structures, development strategies, patent disputes, professional help, and so on. Furthermore, during the one-hour discussion, Michael discussed with everyone about the pain points of early-stage research project startups.
Highlights of it are as follow.
You’ve said the person, the founder were more in the centre of start-up, but not the idea. So yourself, as a VC, what quality of the person do you think highly of?
I think many aspects can be considered. Understanding market is one of the must. You will definitely fail if you don’t know about the market. And like the gentleman said, high motivation can help you keep working. And for me, the most important skill is learning skill. When you are at the early stage, there are many troubles you need to cover. And fast learning will help you a lot.
You’ve talked about millions of government supports and grants, so can you explain the details? What can I get from Chinese government?
There are different polices for different companies and projects. Even if you are in the high-tech industry, different categories’ gaining are totally different. Some comman gov. grants: Direct Investment from Industrial Capital, Tech Business Grant, High-level Talent Grant, Tax Benefits, Rent Rebate etc. I don’t know what business you run, but you can come to our Fishburners and we can talk later.
I’m an undergraduate student, and I was choosing from going to master degree and to run a business. So, what’s your opinion about student entrepreneurship?
I am not opposite with that, but I will not recommend it. Founding a start-up company is one thing that you need to make a full-time on. Only if you have enough energy and time, you can make a business. You can try to start a project in uni but not a company.
It is a delight to join hands with the Science and Technology Conference. Together we hope to promote China’s technology and entrepreneurship development and to build a bridge with entrepreneurs. Fishburners, where startups start, grow and success. Future founders are welcomed to contact us.
