3D printing, laser cutting, underwater robotics, drones... Walking around the CIS IDEALab is definitely an experience full of "wow" moments. But there's more to it than just the aesthetics.
At CIS, the goal of IDEALab is to build the maker-mindset in our students, so that they become creative and confident problem solvers. We follows the Design Thinking Process from Stanford d.School that encourages students to create solutions to real-world problems. Our IDEALab equips students with the most up-to-date tools, helping them develop their creative abilities to make the world a better place. It’s a place, a community, and a mindset. 3D Printing: An Efficient Way to Prototype and Test
3D打印:高效建模和测试
The first step to grow an idea into reality is prototype. 3D printing is one of our most commonly used technologies in the IDEALab. Students in elementary learn to use 3D printers and their products have been widely used in community projects and Future City competitions (Click to see CIS students winning national STEAM competition!)
"The best thing about 3D printing prototype is that it can create almost ANYTHING from scratch! Students can see if their idea works or not and easily improve their design using multiple approaches and prints." says Ms. Kivi, our Idea Lab coordinator.
将想法变成现实的第一步就是制作原型。3D打印是创客中心中最常用的技术之一。从小学阶段同学们就可以开始学习使用3D打印机,作品已广泛应用于社区项目和未来城市比赛(点击阅读:CIS学生获全国STEAM赛事二等奖)。

Coding and Robotics: Problem-solving, automatically!

You'll be surprised how well CIS student use coding and robotic technologies to solve daily problems. An example, embedded in Grade 7 Science, students created self-monitoring and self-watering devices with Microbit to keep plants healthy and alive without checking it every day. To use coding and build products like that introduces students to the basics of programming, help them understand the computer language and of course, there's nothing better than a moment of triumph!
你会惊讶于CIS学生如何熟练使用编码和机器人技术来解决日常问题。例如,在七年级的科学课上,同学们用Microbit创建了自动监测土壤湿度和自动浇水设备,保证植物健康成长,免去了每天检查浇水的麻烦。这种编程和产品设计是同学们的编程入门课,帮助他们理解计算机语言,当然还能享受成功创造产品的美好和喜悦!
AR and VR: A Way of Immersive Presentation
虚拟和增强现实:沉浸式的成果展示工具
Augmented and virtual reality represents an immersive experience that allows students to visit remote locations, or observe the life of ancient civilizations by simply putting on a google! They make learning more accessible especially in geography and history classes. Our senior students have gone a big step beyond that by creating residential schools for their Social Studies unit about Orange Shirt Day, adding another powerful tool to their presentation skillset. Laser Cutting: Exploring the Nature of Materials

Another very trending prototyping tool is our laser cutting machine. With a laser cutter, students can quickly create first scale models and learn how to manufacture safely and quickly. Modifications to prototypes are quick, easy and it's a perfect tool for students to strengthen their dimension skills in Math, explore all kinds of materials in Physics, and build on their engineering mindset and skills.
另一个时下流行的原型建模工具是激光切割机。有了激光切割机,学生们可以快速地创建第一版比例模型,并学习如何安全、快速地制作并修改原型。在这个过程中,巩固数学中的测量知识,探索物理中的材料性质,并建立工程师的思维模式。
Technology has made learning more engaging and collaborative for students at CIS. Rather than memorizing facts, students learn by doing and through critical thinking. By providing materials and tools, CIS aims to raise future leaders who possess a maker mindset, know how to use technology responsibly, and utilize what they learn to impact and contribute to a better world.
