BANK 代理艺术家文爵|BANK Represents the Artist Wenjue
BANK is honored to announce the representation of artist Wenjue.
Born in 2001 in Beijing, Wenjue studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris in 2015 and then at Atelier François Legrand in 2016. In 2019, he became a lifelong member of the Fondation Taylor. Wenjue currently lives in Shanghai. His work revolves around the experimentation with the medium of "oil paints”. Through the physical accumulation of oil paints, he makes three-dimensional rock-like and bas-relief sculptures collide with two-dimensional paintings, creating a new dialogue and giving a new definition to structure and image. As a young artist, his works are influenced by art history and classical painting, fashion, and Japanese manga, demonstrating the unique visual preferences and cultural observations of the post-00s generation.
Wenjue presented his solo exhibition Supercalifragilisticexpialidociousism and The Horn of Plenty at BANK's THE VAULT Space in March 2023. The exhibition featured works created by Wenjue in recent years. In these works, one can see the artist's fictionalization and exploration of his own identity, as well as his references and homages to different kinds of visual culture.
The title of the exhibition is inspired by the sci-fi movie Lucy directed by French director Luc Besson, which tells the story of a woman who gradually becomes a superhuman after ingesting a drug that can activate her brain's potential. In the case of Wenjue, the paintings themselves are the method of creating the "superhuman" doppelgangers, and the subtitle "The Horn of Plenty" hints at the varied origins of these creations. While not all of the paintings have a clear classical provenance, almost all of the images are housed in a grotto-like mound of thickly applied pigment: the bright, creamy colors of these paintings have the potential to be used in a variety of ways. The bright, creamy pigments, some very symmetrical, others intended to create depth, are mostly intended to create a sense of solemn ritual, and with the monstrous figures of gods and monsters at the center of the picture and the incantation-like titles, the paintings seem both sweet and spooky at the same time.
In the upcoming ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair, which will open on November 9th, BANK will present a tri-solo of Wenjue and Zhang Yibei at booth D02. Wenjue's painting will also be featured in BANK's 10th Anniversary Group Exhibition, which will open on November 10th.
