Peking University on Monday rejected a circulated rumor that a grandson of telecom fraud gang leader Ming Xuechang, currently at large, is studying at the school.
Ming Guagnzhong (or Aung Win Oo in Burmese, who is considered the grandson of Ming Xuechang) is not a Peking University student, it announced. "The picture posted online is fake."
Images circulated online show that Ming Xuechang held a banquet on Jan. 30 this year to celebrate the admission of his grandson Ming Guangzhong to Peking University.
One picture shows Ming Xuechang patting Ming Guangzhong's shoulder in front of a big board with an admission letter from Peking University and the name Aung Win Oo.
However many sharp-eyed netizens found that there were many errors in the letter, including the domain name of Peking University and the school title.
The Ministry of Public Security issued an arrest warrant on Sunday on its public WeChat account for Ming Xuechang, Ming Guoping, Ming Julan, and Ming Zhenzhen, all part of a telecom fraud syndicate based in northern Myanmar that targets Chinese citizens in Kokang Autonomous Region of northern Myanmar.
Ming Xuechang, 69, is a former member of Myanmar’s Shan State legislature and a former member of the Kokang Leadership Committee.
Ming Xuechang's son Ming Guoping is a militia squadron leader in Kokang while his two daughters Ming Julanand Ming Zhenzhen are from Lincang in Yunnan province.
A few days before the warrant was announced, two bodies were exhumed on a property owned by the Ming family.
In an ongoing crackdown on telecom fraud originating from northern Myanmar and targeting Chinese citizens, a batch of 2,349 suspects have been transferred from Myanmar to Chinese custody, the Ministry of Public Security announced in October.
