According to China Central Television, 85 people were rewarded for reporting suspected espionage activities in China in 2023. Nevertheless, on the opposite end of those who received rewards, were 2 individuals who were punished for reporting "spies".One of the two individuals is a man surnamed Li who repeatedly made phone calls to the national 12339 hotline which is set up to receive tips about suspected espionage activities in the country. He called the hotline in various regions of the country more than 20 times.However, the reports by Li who claimed that he was threatened by spies were proved to be false reports. The motive behind Li's making such reports were not mentioned in the notice, but were condemned by officials.Another man, surnamed Zhao, also falsely reported an individual to the authorities, whom he accussed of engaging in espionage activities. However, the authorities found that Zhao had reported the individual just because they had a financial dispute.Both Li and Zhao were detained for making false reports and illegally occupying crucial national security reporting hotlines.
