Friedrich's Wanderer above the Sea of Fog separates man and nature. However, the notion of 'wild nature' that is untouched by humans no longer exists, as there is no place on earth that is unaffected by climate change, a primary concern that needs to be tackled by architects in the age of the Anthropocene.

In an attempt to introduce a peculiar view on landscapes, we will engage with familiar and unfamiliar tools. Machine learning will be used as a vehicle to develop new fictitious agendas that tend to unfold through engagement, rather than a scientific approach that investigates from a distance.

Zaid Kashef Alghata

Founder & Lead Designer of House of ZKA

Princeton, MArch

Zaid has previously worked at Gensler (Los Angeles) and UN Studio (Hong Kong) on theaters, residential towers, and mixed-use developments of various scales. He is completing his Post-Professional M.Arch at Princeton University. He holds a B.Arch from the Southern California Institute of Architecture, where he received a Merit for an outstanding thesis project and a foundation degree from the Architectural Association. 

Zaid is currently co-teaching a graduate studio with Jesse Reiser at Princeton's School of Architecture and has co-advised undergraduate thesis with Marcelo Spina at SCI-Arc. He was a research assistant to Sylvia Lavin for a project on 'Media History and the Archive of Everything Architectural' and to Todd Gannon for Craig Hodgetts' publication, 'Swimming to Suburbia and Other Essays.' Zaid continues to expand his research project in the form of one-on-one interviews with architects and theorists under the moniker 'Clashes and Intersections'.

Zaid has been invited to lecture at the Museum of Modern Art (Bologna), UCLA AUD (Los Angeles), the American University (Dubai), and as part of the continuing education series at the AIA Middle East (Bahrain). He was an invited juror for studio reviews at the Architectural Association (London), SCI-Arc (Los Angeles), Knowlton School of Architecture (Ohio), Columbia's GSAPP (New York), UCLA's AUD & Supra Studios (Los Angeles), AA Visiting School (Los Angeles and Mexico City), the Urban Design Lab at Columbia's Earth Institute (New York) and the University of Bahrain (Isa Town).

Tucker van Leuwen-Hall

SCI-Arc Visual Study Faculty 

Tucker van Leuwen-Hall is a creator, designer, and educator based in Los Angeles.  He attended the Southern California Institute of Architecture where he received a Bachelor of Architecture and a Masters of Science in Architectural Technologies both graduating with distinction. His project “Deep Plan” received the Hsinming Fung and Craig Hodgetts Postgraduate Thesis Prize.  

Tucker’s work is concerned with the shifting paradigms of culture that architecture is uniquely qualified to confront.  His work looks to examine new pedagogical models and architectural manifestations that emerge from new subjectivities and identity politics; the waning politics of globalization; the fallout of the Anthropocene; and techniques and aesthetics unique to machine learning. He is currently a faculty member in the Visual Studies Department of SCI-Arc.
