China's red-hot tourism sector outstripped industry expectations over the May Day holiday — a five-day break starting on Saturday, with enthusiastic travelers overwhelming some lesser-known destinations and crowding old favorites.

从4月29日开始的“五一”五天小长假期间，热情高涨的游客蜂拥至小众和大众旅游地，旅游业的红火超出了业内预期。

The fulfillment of people's long-suppressed desire to travel, earlier stymied due to COVID-19 outbreaks, has injected new impetus into the rapid revival of the nation's economy.

民众早前由于新冠疫情而被长久压抑的旅游需求得到满足，为国家经济的快速复苏注入了新动力。

A total of 274 million visits were made during the holiday, up 70.83 percent year-on-year, according to data released by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on Wednesday. The figure is an increase of more than 19 percent for the same period in 2019. This year's visits generated revenue of around 148 billion yuan ($21.4 billion), up 128.9 percent year-on-year, the ministry said.

Barbecue hotspot Zibo braces for sizzling influx of tourists

Zibo, an industrial city in the east China province of Shandong, has become a top hotspot for holidaymakers for China's week-long May Day public holiday. It's so popular that Zibo city authorities are urging people to visit during off-peak periods or to consider going to other places in the Shandong province instead.

Zibo's popularity exploded over the last two months after college students' videos of the city's affordable local barbecue went viral on social media, according to state-owned China Daily. Zibo's barbecue skewers are unique in that they are partially cooked before they are served to diners, who can then finish cooking them on their own, per China Daily.

Chinese mountaineer Dong Hongjuan has become the first woman to conquer all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters on earth.

中国登山者董红娟成为全球首位登顶全部14座海拔8000米级高峰的女性。

Dong, 42, successfully ascended to the summit of 8,027-meter Mount Shishapangma on Wednesday, which was confirmed by the international mountaineering summit website 8000ers.com on Sunday.

4月26日，42岁的董红娟成功登顶海拔8027米的希夏邦马峰。4月30日，国际登山登顶认证网站8000ers.com正式认定了董红娟的成就。

"I started climbing out of curiosity, but when I found out about the (eight-thousander climber) list, I hoped there would be a Chinese name on it," said Dong at a celebration banquet in Lhasa on Saturday.
