China's gross domestic product grew 4.5 percent year on year in the first quarter of 2023, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed Tuesday. On a quarterly basis, the economy increased 2.2 percent in the first three months.

国家统计局18日发布数据，初步核算，今年一季度我国国内生产总值（GDP）同比增长4.5%，比上年四季度环比增长2.2%。

"China's national economy made a good start this year, and market expectation saw significant improvement," said NBS spokesperson Fu Linghui at a press conference.

国家统计局新闻发言人付凌晖当日在国新办发布会上说：“一季度国民经济企稳回升，开局良好。”

China's GDP grew 3 percent year on year in 2022, and 2.9 percent year on year in the fourth quarter of last year.

2022年全年国内生产总值比上年增长3.0%，四季度同比增长2.9%。

The 133rd China Import and Export Fair

The 133rd China Import and Export Fair kicked off in Guangzhou on April 15, showing the resilient recovery of the Chinese economy.

4月15日，第133届中国进出口商品交易会在广州开幕，折射出中国经济动能强劲复苏。

The event, also known as the Canton Fair, is held twice a year in Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong province. A total of 370,000 offline visits were registered on the first day, with 67,000 of those being foreign vendors and buyers, according to the organizers.

中国进出口商品交易会也被称为广交会，每年在中国南部广东省省会广州举行两次。广交会官方统计数据显示，本届广交会首日进场人次37万，其中外商高达6.7万。

The fair also has in place online services for product promotion and matching and business negotiations, enabling both Chinese and international businesses to land orders remotely. The online exhibitions tallied 410,000 visits on Saturday.

广交会还提供在线产品推广、需求匹配和商务谈判服务，使中外企业都能远程下单。15日，线上共有41万人参会。

Over 39,000 companies are taking part in the trade fair online, with a further 35,000 enterprises from China and abroad attending on-site.

本届广交会线上展企业达到3.9万多家，线下展企业达到3.5万家。

苏丹爆发武装冲突

Fighting erupts in Sudan

Fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) broke out on Saturday, forcing civilians to flee and seek shelter from the hostilities. Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands injured. 

4月15日，苏丹武装部队同准军事组织快速支援部队爆发武装冲突，平民被迫逃离避难。冲突已造成数百人死亡、数千人受伤。

A 24-hour ceasefire agreed upon by the Sudanese Army and the RSF has failed on Wednesday with eyewitnesses saying fightings continue.

Dwindling vital supplies and the threatened healthcare system in Sudan are pressing issues. Residents are running out of food, fuel and other vital supplies, with the health care system in danger of collapse, UN humanitarians said on Wednesday.
