Crested ibis, an endemic species in East Asia, was once widely spread in China, Japan, Russia and DPRK, etc. As the environmental deterioration, their habitats have been damaged seriously, and the population has decreased dramatically. The last 7 wild crested ibis in the world were found in China in 1981.

"Crested ibis live in a particular environment. I hope to see them fly freely, not being encaged." Says Li Xia, a professional protector of crested ibis. For nearly 10 years, he put himself in the mountains at Ningshan County, Shaanxi Province, defending both his mission and his faith.

“For the artificial breeding, basically we feed them with worms in the morning, and mud fish in the afternoon. If we fed them with just one kind of food, it could lead to malnutrition."

In 2007, Li Xia participated in the world’s first off-site release project for the crested ibis. Protecting them has become an indispensable part of his life. "The more you work with them, the more you're addicted to them." Said Li. Crested ibis are not only some birds he takes care of, but also his best friends.

“Back in 2008, we found a nest with 3 fledglings in it, and a king rat snake was approaching. So I ran down the hill looking for help. I was standing on the ladder, when another worker climbed on my shoulders and poked the snake away with a bamboo stick. After that, the father ibis would always come to me.”

In order to enhance the crested ibis' viability, Li Xia gradually shifted the focus to protect its living environment. "The villagers were not happy with banning pesticide and fertilizer at first. But because of the crested ibis, more tourists are coming to buy their home-grown eggs, corns and vegetables. Therefore everyone started to work on the protection of the birds."

Thanks to the unremitting effort of the protectors like Li Xia, the wild crested ibis on record have been up to more than 100 at Ningshan County. "As the wild animals exist healthily and happily, human would benefit more.” Said Li Xia. His persistence not only helps preserving a rare species on this land, but also makes immortal contributions to the development of our descendants.
