Hossu: Wudang Taoist priest's magical weapon
Hossu is a tool whose front end is attached to animal hair or silky linen. It derived in Qin and Han Dynasties in ancient China and was first used to sweep away dust or drive mosquitoes and flies.
However, the Hossu has gradually evolved into a weapon by Taoism. At first, when the Taoists traveled around, they sometimes met some beasts or the evil on their trip. They would use the Hossu to fight the creatures. Gradually, they developed some forms and actions through fighting beasts to defend themselves. Later, the Taoists often carry the Hossu as a weapon while traveling. As a weapon, the Hossu has similar characteristics of the knife and whip, such as hack, pull, wrap, sweep, shake, and so on. Therefore, you need to gather the hair of the Hossu and then smash it out when using it.

Luo Yingzhi is the 15th generation of the outstanding inheritor of the Wudang faction. In childhood, he hoped to live a carefree life like an immortal. "Asking foreign guests about mysteries and Taoism, enjoying poetry and wine with peers and friends." Therefore, he went to Wudang Mountain alone to study and practice martial arts. He had a profound understanding of the Taoist charm by ten years' study.

In the beginning, Luo Yingzhi got the opportunity to know about Hossu when he watched a performance of some Taoists. The strength begins in the feet. It moves up to the legs, from the legs to the waist, and then to the shoulders. Performing like a slap in the air, flashing and jumping, flexible and changeable. These kinds of moves are like the image of Taoists that appears in many films. They wear the Taoist robes and Taoist shoes holding the dust in hands. They are venerable and distinguished.

In addition to giving people a sense of fluidity and freedom, the Hossu of Wudang has something deeper. The Hossus in the dojo is used more to clean up the dust before the opening ceremony. What the Taoists want to sweep is not the dust but the distracting thoughts which are also inconsistent with the Taoist.

In the past, Taoists never came down mountains in their lifetime for practicing. "Reading books and poetry, developing spiritual and physical fitness, caring for both the world and local area, cumulating wisdom in mind". Nowadays, modern people are facing a variety of temptations every day. The desires in the minds are troublesome, but when you sweep by the Hossu, you could "get rid of troubles" to a certain extent.
"We have to clear away the desire in our minds. It is not terrible to have distracting thoughts in minds. What is terrible is that you can't get rid of them." said Luo Yingzhi.
