高原教师 | Plateau Teachers

Zuogong County is located in southeastern Tibet, China. It covers three towns, seven townships, and 127 administrative villages. The whole county has only one middle school, Zuogong County Middle School.

左贡县位于中国西藏自治区东南部，辖三个镇，七个乡，127个行政村。全县只有一所初中—左贡县中学。

Su Xin is the headmaster of Zuogong County Middle School. He is from Liang Shan, Sichuan Province. His wife, Gan Runmei is also from Sichuan. She is now an English teacher at the school.  They both came to Tibet for teaching after graduating from university in 2001. In 18 years, the school has changed a lot.

左贡县中学校长，苏鑫，四川凉山人。苏鑫的爱人，甘润梅，四川资中人，现在是左贡县中学的一名英语老师。他们2001年大学毕业后，即赴藏被分配到左贡县中学任教。18年来，他们亲历了左贡县中学翻天覆地的变化。

When they first came to the school, over a hundred students could only speak Tibetan. Su Xin spent a month learning Tibetan and teaching students Mandarin Chinese so that they could communicate. The farthest township, Bitu Township, is more than 160 kilometers from the county seat. In the past, it took students 3 days to walk to school. All the equipment in the school was not perfect. “We had only one teaching building at that time, students and teachers lived in a shed instead of a dormitory. If it rained, we need to put two buckets on the television and bed to catch water,” said Gan.

他们刚来的时候，全校只有100多个学生，大部分学生只说藏语。苏鑫老师就花了一个月时间，学习藏语并教学生学习普通话，这才得以交流。离县城最远的碧土乡小学的学生，到县城路途有160多公里，学生上学就得走三天。 “当时学校的硬件设施还不是很完善，”甘润梅老师回忆道：“以前教学楼只有一栋，我们和学生都住在工棚里，如果天下雨，电视机上面要挂两个水桶，床上还要放两个盆子接水。”

With the construction by the country, the asphalt road was paved and the school has become better and better. Students in Tibet could obtain a traffic cash allowance from the government. The traffic cash allowance is to make sure students can arrive at school no matter how far they live from the school. Also, students will be protected by local policemen during their way to school or home. After four periods of construction, the school now has 15 school buildings and a standard playground. More and more parents have recognized the importance of education, so the number of students in Zuogong County Middle School has increased to more than 1,500.

在国家的建设下，路修好了，学校的条件也完善起来了。为了确保远途的学生入学，国家发放专门的交通补助。同时，乡政府派出所在学生上下学期间，会派专人护送，保障学生的安全。经历了四次修建，学校的校舍目前共有15幢，还有一个标准的运动场馆。老百姓对教育的意识也提高了，越来越多的家长送孩子入学，如今在左贡县中学读书的学生达1500多人。

Gan Runmei is the headmaster’s wife, an English teacher. 校长的夫人甘润梅是学校的英语老师。

Due to the long distance between home to school, most students could only go home once a semester. Teachers at school in Tibet need to take care of all aspects of student life. “We are not only the students’ teachers, but also their parents,” said Gan.

由于上下学的路途比较远，大部分学生一学期只能回一次家。在这里任教的老师不仅要做好教学工作，还得照顾学生的方方面面。甘润梅老师说，以前比较年轻，像是学生的姐姐，而现在更像学生的父母。

In these 18 years, 7 of Su and Gan's students have become headmasters in Tibet. It is a pity that the couple can't stay with their child and parents as they are in hometown in Sichuan. There are always less than 100 days in a year that they can all be together.

18年来，他们教出了7个校长，却没能照顾到自己的孩子和父母。他们在西藏工作，老人和小孩在四川老家，一年和家人团聚的时间总是不超过100天。

There are more than 1000 students in Zuogong County. 左贡县中学有1000多名学生。

In Zuogong County Middle School, there are 123 teachers from 13 different provinces.

在左贡县中学任教的老师如今有123名，他们来自全国13个省市。

It is because of a group of people like them spending more time with students instead of family that education in remote areas can improve.

正因为有这么多像他们一样“舍小家，为大家”的默默奉献者，边远地区的学生才能享受越来越好的教育。
