TRAVEL

Shanghai Ancol Dreamland Herb Farm (上海寻梦园香草农场)

The farm is open daily from 8am - 6pm and costs RMB 50 to enter, and they are currently in the process of building an outdoor BBQ area so guests can spend the entire afternoon there. Note that the farm is located about a 25-minute cab ride from the Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, so you will need to take a DiDi.

Since the farm is relatively remote, it’s hard to get a DiDi back to the train station, so you may want to ask the driver who drove you on your way there for his phone number otherwise you may end up hitchhiking a few kilometers. There is a public bus that runs every 30 minutes from a few blocks north of the farm back to the train station as well.

Nanxiang

Nanxiang’s origin story started back in roughly AD 420-589, when the town was known as Chaxi during the reign of Emperor Liangwu. During that time, a farmer was clearing land to build his farm, and upon removing a large rock, a pair of red-crowned cranes flew above it. Since cranes are considered holy in Buddhism, a monk living nearby proclaimed that Chaxi was a holy land for Buddha. Thus, the Baihe Nanxiang Temple was erected in AD 505, and a town grew around it, receiving the same name as the temple.

As the hometown of Xiaolongbao, this is where you want to go to fulfill cravings for the real deal. When you want to take a break from stuffing your face, Nanxiang also has some fantastic historical sights, temples, and gardens. Similar to nearby watertowns, Nanxiang is composed of winding alleyways, canals, and bridges, but it has its own personality that is clearly distinct.

Underwater Hotel Splurge

Patience is a virtue. This bold project launched and overseen by Sanya Tourism took over five years and billions of dollars to see the light of day, and what resulted from such a large-scale construction was a hotel experience like no other.

A total area of 540,000 square meters, 1,314 guest rooms, five underwater suites and 21 restaurants, bars and lounges as well as 86,000 marine animals representing over 270 species including 40 dolphins and sea lions and, for those looking for a quick thrill, a 2,510-meter-long slide.

Moganshan

With so many changes throughout the year, each trip to Moganshan is never the same. You can find everything from wellness-focused stays for ultimate relaxation and terraces with incredible panoramic mountain views, to hikes through beautiful natural scenery.

Die Yun

Where: Near Yong Village

Style: Design-centric

Highlights: Cement box style architecture + pool

At Die Yun, the industrial theme and cement box style design stands out against the natural beauty of Moganshan, making it one of our favorite stays in the area. Hidden in the forest, the place has an outdoor pool, which proves to be a great place to hang out in the summer.

Each room has a different cloud theme, like “cloud gazing”, “passing cloud” and more. The rooms adopt a warmer color palette, breaking away from the industrial theme. The flooring and ceiling are made from wood, and compliments the orange headboard on the bed, for a warm and homely feel. The loft style rooms are great for family and friends, and the master bedroom on the second floor faces the mountainous view, and adds a beautiful black spiral staircase for a design-led touch.

Nanjing

Since we all live in the expat haven that is Shanghai, Nanjing - also known as the old Southern Capital of China - easily gets overlooked. Don’t skip this city and assume that it’s the same as Shanghai, because this culturally-rich city provides the perfect balance of historical and religious sites, outdoor hiking, urban trekking, university town relaxing, and snacking. Pack your bags for an easy day trip or a chill weekend getaway!

Anji

Famous for its stunning bamboo forests and setting of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, the county of Anji is a beautiful scenic spot offering some excellent scenic hiking trails. The area is truly off the beaten path and the opposite of the metropolis that is Shanghai.  Explore the peaceful town of Anji itself and sample the spicy bamboo shoots dish ( 竹字 zhu zi). Also, the region produces white tea (白茶 baicha) which is a must-try while you are there.

How to get there:

Either take the 4-hour bus (RMB 68) from Shanghai South Railway Station to Anji which departs every hour from 7:10am to 10:10am. Alternatively, you can take the train to Hangzhou which leaves every half hour (RMB 50 - RMB 115) followed by a bus ride to Anji (under 1 hour).

For the Tianjia Mountain campsite follow GPS to “Chengyu Bamboo Crafts”; then follow the signs to the campsite.

Meadow Brook

Finding a place to ride a horse can be quite tricky in Shanghai! However, if the feeling overwhelms you, you can always head to Meadow Brook in Qingpu District. The park contains professional stables and horseback-riding alongside campsites and barbecue facilities. Meadows, woods and natural ponds make it attractive for barbecues, games, parties and camping away from the city.

How to get there:

Take the metro to Donging Station (Line 9) and grab a taxi to Meadow Brook approximately an 11km taxi ride away.

This will save you money AND keep your kids entertained - genius! An up-cycled crib will give the perfect arts station where they can draw, paint and glue to their heart’s content.

Keep them from getting locked in the bathroom

Source: kidsactivitiesblog.com

We’re not sure about you, but even as an adult we have this irrational fear of getting locked in any room - cue claustrophobia. Hinder any chances of this happening with

your little one by trying this elastic band trick to keep those doors open.

Transform an old DVD case into a travel-friendly art kit

Perfect for your upcoming summer getaways, this is a great hack for keeping your artsy kids entertained for a couple of hours (or maybe just minutes) whilst waiting for your plane, train, or to help you survive a long car ride.

Create a board for busy-bodies

Source: Reddit User [deleted]

This has got to be one of our favorite hacks out there. Stop those busy little fingers from meddling with things that are quite obviously off-limits, and create this board just for them out of items you can easily find around the house or at any local hardware store.

Contain the mess

Source: IG User @mommydoesntlie

Grab an old fitted sheet, turn it inside out and place a weight in each corner. What do you get? A safe space where your kids can make a mess and NOT ruin your carpet / wooden flooring / tiles / make you lose your marbles.

Zip it up!

Source: Instagram user: @creativeqt

Avoid the clutter before guests come over by cramming all of the stuffed toys your toddler leaves around the house into an empty beanbag! Once done, you’ll have a comfy seat and toy storage all in one.

Cupcake liners save the day

Source: Instagram user @themom_turnup

We can already tell that we’re going to be obsessed with this hack (even for us adults)! There’s nothing worse than ice cream melting onto your hand and turning into a sticky mess that seems to get everywhere. Stop the drips in their tracks by sliding a cupcake liner under the ice pop.

DOG-FRIENDLY

West Bund Riverside Dog Parks

It’s an impressive stretch of green grass along the Huangpu River as well as the West Bund Open Space with a cool running track (the Adidas Runbase) and the Long Museum. This is an inclusive space with areas for basketball, skateboarding, running, kite flying, tight-rope practice (there’s a group here every weekend), amazing sunny picnics and more! Dogs of all sizes are free to roam anywhere on a leash. There is a section surrounded by short bushes that’s dedicated to dogs. It's up to the owners whether or not to let the dogs off leash here, as it’s possible for them to get out. If you have a high energy furball who may go wild and bolt, better keep them on a leash at all times. The toilets of the Long Museum are accessible to the public and are kept clean.

Huashan Park

This park is central and quite large; a lovely blessing of green, almost like a hideaway from the busy streets. There’s a nice wooden walkway that loops in and around the park, going over a cute little rocky pond, across a mahjong-only balcony, a bamboo forest and lots of greenery! Note that not all the grass in this park is open to dogs. The park authorities have placed placards (in Chinese) to state this, which is a bit of a downer.

ENJOY THE BUND FOR FREE

Wharf 16

Catch the evening hues of the sunset from the Shiliupu Wharf, or Wharf 16. Watch the boats sail by along the piers and pop by one of the many restaurants and cafés in the area.

Binjiang Avenue

What is Pudong’s version of The Bund? Why, it’s Binjiang Avenue of course! Stretching along the Huangpu river parallel to the historical Bund, you can find a boardwalk lined with food and snack options. This is perfect for an evening stroll while enjoying a serene spring sunset.

Waibaidu Bridge

The Waibaidu Bridge crosses over the Suzhou Creek which houses plenty of historical buildings. A sunset walk on this bridge will give you the old world charm of Shanghai as well as the futuristic background of the Lujiazui skyline.
